Tom Hanks' wife Rita Wilson has undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, it's been revealed today.

The actress confirmed in a statement that she had decided to have the surgery to remove both breasts, as well as reconstructive surgery after being diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma.

Having caught the cancer early and opted for surgery, Rita says her doctors expect her to make a full recovery.

"Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma," she said in a statement published by People magazine.

"I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion," she added.

The 58-year-old mother of two thanked Tom and her family for their support, saying, "I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction. I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health."

The news comes just weeks after actress Angelina Jolie revealed she had undergone elective surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes as a preventative measure, following a double mastectomy back in 2012.

We wish Rita a full and speedy recovery.
