According to emerging reports, police in London are considering manslaughter charges in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

While it has been established that the blaze originated with a faulty fridge-freezer, police have now confirmed that both the insulation and tiles in the tower block failed safety tests.

It has been established that tile and insulation, which were recovered from the building, proved 'more flammable than the cladding' – a discovery which has led police to investigate the legality of these materials.

Speaking to the media, Metropolitan Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack, who is overseeing the investigation, said: "All I can say at the moment is they (tiles and insulation) don’t pass any safety tests."

"What we are being told at the moment by the Building Research Establishment is that the cladding and insulation failed all safety tests," she reiterated.

Elaborating on the direction with which the police will now take, she added: "We are looking at every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards. We are reviewing every company involved in the building and refurbishment."

The death toll from the fire is believed to stand at 79, but authorities have warned that this figure is likely to increase.

A mentally-ill young man stabbed new dad Dr Jeroen Ensink to death as he went to post baby cards announcing the birth.

His daughter, Fleur, had arrived into the world just 11 days before the tragedy.

The 41-year-old academic was renowned in his field and died metres from the front door of his London home on December 29 last year.

Femi Nandap, 23, had launched a random, vicious attack, repeatedly stabbing Dr Ensink.

Jeroen's wife, Nadja, was at home with their baby. She became concerned at his delay and went outside to see if she could see him. There, she found his body among Fleur's baby cards, which were strewn on the ground and splattered in blood.

Her husband was pronounced dead at the scene.

This morning at the Old Bailey, Nandap, of Woolwich, south-east London, admitted the manslaughter of Dr Ensink by reason of diminished responsibility. He appeared via video link from Broadmoor hospital.

The case has been adjourned until October 10 for sentencing.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC told the court: "There has been extensive psychiatric consideration in this case and the psychiatric opinion is clear, cogent and unanimous."

He added: "Given the defendant's history, the facts of the offence itself, the Crown take the view it is not in the public interest to pursue the murder allegation and that decision has been taken I'm consultation with the family of the deceased."

Less than three months before he killed Jeroen, who was originally from Holland, Nandap appeared in court accused of possessing a knife and assaulting a police officer.

It was alleged he had two kitchen knives with him in Edmonton on May 22, 2015 and that he assaulted PC Wellings on the same day.

Dr Ensink was a renowned water engineer and a dedicated humanitarian who was committed to improving access to water and sanitation in deprived countries.

Teenage schoolgirl Rebecca Watts was murdered and dismembered by her stepbrother, Nathan Matthews, following a sexually-motivated kidnap plot, a court has now found.

His girlfriend Shauna Hoare – who denied any involvement in the killing – has this afternoon been charged with manslaughter.

Speaking after the verdicts, the family of Becky Watts paid tribute to her, saying she was a "loyal, loving, smiley, feisty and caring" girl. They added: "Cherish your children, as time with them can be too short".

Matthews, 28, suffocated 16-year-old Becky while trying to kidnap her from her home in Bristol on February 19.

After bringing her body 3km away to the property he shared with Hoare, he used a circular saw, goggles, masks, bags, cling film and tape to cut up and package her body.

Her remains were found 12 days later in eight different parts – stored in suitcases and a box – in a shed 80metres from Matthews's house.

A jury at Bristol Crown Court took just three-and-a-half hours to decide on their verdict. As well as manslaughter, Hoare was furthermore convicted of perverting the course of justice and preventing Becky's lawful burial.

Reading a statement on behalf of the family outside the court, the murdered teen's uncle said: 'Finally justice has been done for our beautiful Becky."

He thanked the "people of Bristol" for their kindness, adding that the family had "also drawn strength in the messages and support from strangers all around the world".

A post mortem had found Becky was suffocated during a "violent struggle" and suffered 15 stab wounds and a slash across her stomach after death.

She had been alone at the home she shared with her father and stepmother on February 19.

Matthews and Hoare, 21, who had been in a relationship for six years, arranged for a key to be left outside the property so they could let themselves in.

After her death, the couple remained at the family home for some eight hours before driving to their house with Becky's body in the boot of their car.

Both will be sentenced on Friday.
