beards

I love a good beard, I must say.

There's something so sexy about them, the way the command attention and can transform a guy from looking cute to looking HOT.

But we have some bad news, guys.

According to a study, your fellas facial hair contains a lot of dirt.

The study analysed bacteria levels in the beards of 18 men aged between 18- and 76-years-old and what the found was gross.

Basically, they were chock FULL of bacteria.

In contrast, only 23 out of 30 dogs had high counts, while the rest had moderate levels.

Professor Andreas Gutzei said, ''On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men.”

Oh, lovely.

A previous study by Fragrance Direct and Manchester Metropolitan University found that, after testing a range of beards from long and short to stubbly, almost half of male beards contained faecal matter.

Dear Lord – we're kissing faces with traces of sh*t on them?

Most of the participants involved in the study claimed they had washed their beards the same day of the test.

Also, interesting to note – shorter beards had more bacteria.

Hmmm, maybe clean-shaven is the way to go…

So, there’s nothing new about male facial hair, but it’s safe to say that the past few years has seen a beard renaissance of such.

Now, we’re not complaining.

But why do so many of us find them so damn attractive?

Well, science finally has the answer.

According to Marie Claire, researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia surveyed over 8,520 women to find out why bearded men leave us weak at the knees.

The participants were divided into three groups and each were shown a different series of photographs.

The images featured the same men without facial hair, with stubble and with a fully-grown beard.

The researchers then asked the women how the men in the images rated in terms of sexual attractiveness, short-term relationships and long-term relationships.

Interestingly, the women were most attracted to men with stubble while full beards scored the lowest.

When it came to short-term romances, stubbled men remained the most desirable.

However, in a rather interesting twist, fully-bearded men came out on top when it came to long-term relationships.

But why?

Well, Barnaby Dixson, co-author of the study, explained that the rugged look is indicative of a ‘male’s ability to compete for resources.’

Apparently, beards also represent certain protective qualities that our subconscious tends to look for when choosing a life partner.

So, if you're confused as the way you cant get that guy from the coffee shop out of your head, don't worry, it's basic instincts.

It was the casting decision that caused an international storm: in the role of Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan – known for his trademark facial hair – would appear clean-shaved.

"Jamie Dornan without a beard is like a cupcake without frosting," one berate individual wrote on Twitter a year ago when the controversial announcement was first made.

Another chipped in with: "If I was Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan kept his beard and Irish accent, Fifty Shades would probably be a lot better."

Rather predictably, here at SHEmazing! Towers we definitely covet the 33-year-old Co Down man's sexy stubble.

But it has come to our attention that the wider public isn't entirely in agreement.

Yes, a brand new survey has now revealed that the likes of Prince Harry, David Beckham, Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt have ALL been deemed to have better beards than Jamie.

In a survey of 1,000 people carried out by the popular Crown Clinic in Manchester (the same clinic favoured by the likes of Calum Best and Dr Christian from Embarrassing Bodies) the ginger whiskers of royal hottie Prince Harry were deemed the world's most lovely.

David Beckham and George Clooney slot in at numbers two and three respectively, while Ben Affleck makes number four.

At the other end of the scale, Jake Gyllenhaal is ranked ninth, while our Jamie rounds up the Top 10.

Interestingly however, women aren't always big fans of facial fuzz: 62 percent say they prefer their lads to be clean-shaven.

Still, growing numbers of men are enhancing their look with either beard or sideburn transplants. Indeed, Crown Clinic says its bookings have jumped by a quarter in the last three years alone.

And surgeon Asim Shahmalak reckons that Prince Harry (who thankfully says he'll be on the market for a while yet) is the facial hair trend-setter of the moment.

The medic revealed: "The reaction to Prince Harry's beard has been universally positive. While he looks great with his ginger fuzz, the sad fact is almost half of men cannot grow a full beard.

"There are gaps in their beard or sideburns and the end result is patchy and unattractive.

"We can fill in those gaps to make sure any man can get a full beard like Harry."

And frankly, we have no problem with more men being rather more princely… or better still, more like Jamie himself. In the meantime, roll on Movember!

Top 10 celebrity beards, as revealed by Crown Clinic:

  1. Prince Harry
  2. David Beckham
  3. George Clooney
  4. Ben Affleck
  5. Ryan Gosling
  6. Hugh Jackman
  7. Alasdhair Willis
  8. Brad Pitt
