what’s on in the cinema

Whether it's date night, an evening with the girls or just a relaxing weekend afternoon you have planned, a trip to the cinema never fails.

Luckily there are some great new releases hitting Irish cinemas today, with everything from rom coms to action in the mix.

Here are the films making waves this week…

Man Up
We never say no to anything starring Simon Pegg, so we already have high hopes for this charming comedy. Eternal singleton Nancy (Lake Bell) is on her way to her parent's wedding anniversary party – oh, the joys – when Jack (Pegg) mistakes her as his blind date. Nancy takes a chance, with some exciting results…

Danny Collins
Al Pacino plays an aging rocker whose world is shaken up when an old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon turns up. Is it too late to change his ways and make peace with his estranged son? Inspired by the true story of folk singer Steve Tilston. Jennifer Garner also stars.

Search Party
This could definitely be hit or miss, but if you're looking for a few cheap laughs we reckon it's your best bet. Directed by Scot Armstrong, one of the writers behind Road Trip and The Hangover 2, the film sees party animals Evan and Jason set out to reunite their best friend with his fiancée. Should be easy, except they're the ones that scared her off in the first place…

While we wait for the weather to catch up with the calendar (hailstones, are you for real Ireland?), we'll be taking refuge from the cold this weekend with a trip to the cinema.

Luckily there's some great films to choose from in this week's line-up of new releases, from drama to horror to some sweet childhood nostalgia.

Here's a look at what's new in this week…

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond
Disney's new epic fantasy adventure sees rebellious teenager Casey (Britt Robertson) catapulted into a futuristic world hidden from most other people. The only person who can tell her more about the mysterious "Tomorrowland" is Frank (George Clooney), a recluse who soon becomes her only ally.

Poltergeist
This new remake of Stephen Spielberg's 1982 film sees a suburban family fighting for the safety of their young daughter (and themselves) after her body is taken over by a terrifying unknown force. We're terrified just thinking about it…

Moomins On The Riviera
Nineties kids will no doubt remember the Moomins picture books and comic strips, first drawn by Finnish writer Tove Jansson in the 1950s. This "rarest and most eccentric family of creatures" are being revisited with a new film, full of gentle satire and humour that is sure to leave you smiling to the very end.

Heading to the cinema over the bank holiday weekend? Here's what's new in for you to check out…

Far From The Madding Crowd
A (possibly now pregnant) Carey Mulligan stars in this adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 1874 literary classic. The English actress plays the headstrong, independent Bathsheba who attracts three very different love interests – sheep farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), the charming but reckless Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), and the steady and prosperous William Boldwood (Michael Sheen). If you're looking for an empowering female film, you can't go too wrong with this.

Unfriended
A horror film sure to put the fear of God in anyone who's ever used social media. Six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who committed suicide a year ago after someone uploaded a video of her online. Now it seems the friends themselves will have to suffer as revenge.

Get Up and Go
Love Hate's Peter Coonan and Killian Scott star in this Irish-made film about a pair of friends whose lives haven't turned out quite as they expected. Alex (Coonan) has just learnt that his girlfriend is pregnant and plans to take the boat to England, while Colin (Scott) is a comedian who could be on the brink of his big break, if only things go to plan.
