In our teenage years it was all about baggy or flared jeans (shudder), but Irish ladies these days can’t get enough of skinnies. It has kind of left us in a style rut though, so we figure it’s time to embrace a new shape. Enter: the boyfriend jean.

If you don’t have a beanpole figure like Keira Knightley, it can be easy to shy away from slouchy styles but there are a huge number of ways to wear boyfriend jeans while still looking sharp and tailored.

Check out these styling tips below…

1. Keep it simple
Pair your denims with a sleek blazer and blouse or plain white t-shirt for understated elegance. This is a classic, chic look that is so easy to pull off. Kim Kardashian wears hers with skyscraper heels but this look works just as well with flats:

2. Crop it out
Balance out the masculine boyfriend style with a sexy crop top – go as high or as low as you like. Even if you don’t want to flash your abs quite as much as Kylie Jenner, a low-slung jean with a little bit of midriff showing is a sexy twist on this look:

3. Prep-school perfect
A tailored oxford shirt is the perfect complement to the comfortable boyfriend jean – or try a sleeveless collared shirt for a more summery look that screams 50s glamour. Eva Mendes goes for a looser shirt tied at the bottom, which is the perfect relaxed style for a chilled weekend afternoon:

4. Saturday night glam
Boyfriend jeans don’t have to just be a daytime option. With some key accessories and high-octane fabrics on top, you’ll be nightclub-ready in no time. Don’t forget the heels! Rihanna combined a structured metallic top with her jeans for a touch of sparkle:

5. Feminine chic
A sheer blouse or silk kimono over loose jeans is the perfect way to give your outfit some extra luxury. Jessica Alba adds a gorgeous coloured scarf to really tie this ladylike look together:

6. Top to toe
Killer stilettos aren’t the only option when it comes to wearing heels. Try a structured ankle boot for an easier-to-wear look that is still fancy enough for evening wear. Rosie Huntington-Whitely stuns in this suede pair:
