Kidney Transplant

by

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Selena and her kidney donor, friend Francia Raisa, opened up about the operation for the first time.

When the 25-year-old singer found out her battle with lupus meant she would need a new kidney, she confessed: 'I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life.'

That's when bestie Francia stepped up and gave what could be described as the most generous gift ever.

Selena has been very private about the operation so far, only telling her 128 million Insta followers about the transplant in a post on September 14.

She also divulged in the post that her battle with lupus and subsequent recovery were what kept her out of the spotlight for the summer. The songstress was diagnosed with lupus in 2015, and has invited her fans to educate themselves on the autoimmune disease.

Selena's Mum also expressed her gratitude for Francia’s generosity, saying 'Selena gained a kidney, I was able to keep my little girl, but I also gained another daughter….thank you to everyone who was there for Sel, Francia and our families.'

When asked if she felt like Francia saved her life in the NBC News interview, the Wizards of Waverley Place actress responded simply, 'Because she did. That’s, that’s it.'

Selena recently announced her first public performance since the kidney transplant.

She will be performing her new single ‘Wolves’ at the American Music Awards.

The full interview with Selena and Francia will air on NBC News next Monday.
