A manhunt is underway as Gardaí in Cork search for a suspect, after a number of shots were fired in the county last night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, shot and killed a dog before opening fire on a car near the village of Newmarket at around 1am.

The suspect then fled the scene in a 131-C black Toyota Corolla, and it's understood he is still armed with a shotgun.

Reports suggest that no one else was involved in the incident.

Gardaí have focussed their search on woodland areas around the village, and are conducting house-to-house searchers as part of the investigation.

Anyone who has seen the car is asked not to approach it and to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022-31450 or any Garda station.

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of American sprinter Tyson Gay’s daughter, Trinity, who was shot in Kentucky in the early hours of this morning.

The 15-year-old was fatally wounded in a restaurant car park in Lexington when two cars of men opened fire on each other at around 4am local time.

Police say Trinity – who was a promising track star – was not a passenger in either of the vehicles, both of which fled the scene after the incident.

She is believed to have been an innocent by-stander who got caught in the crossfire.

Shortly before she was killed, Trinity managed to Tweet about the shooting when she wrote: “Of course they start shootin (sic)”.

Her Olympian father – who is the second fastest man to run 100 metres in history – confirmed her death to CNN.

He said: “She didn’t make it.  I’m so confused.  She was just here last week for fall break.  It’s so crazy.  I have no idea what happened.”

Trinity’s mother, Shoshana Boyd, told the Daily News that her daughter wanted to become “the fastest woman in the world” and to be a surgeon.

She said: “She was so innocent, she was so innocent.”

“I just want people to stop shooting and realise who they’re hurting. It’s just random. They don’t understand, they don’t understand who they’re hurting.”

Social media is already flooded with tributes to the teen.

In light of her death, people are once again calling for better gun control laws in the US.

Salma Hayek shared some really upsetting news yesterday when she posted on social media, telling her fans that her dog had been shot dead on the ranch where she lives.

"I haven't posted for a week as I been mourning the death of my dog, Mozart," Salma wrote on Instagram, "who I personally delivered out of his mother's womb. He was found dead in my ranch last Friday with a shot close to his heart.

I haven't posted for a week as I been mourning the death of my dog, Mozart who I personally delivered out of his mother's womb. He was found dead in my ranch last Friday with a shot close to his heart. I am hoping that the Washington State authorities do justice to this wonderful dog whom in 9 years never bit or attacked anyone. He loved his territory and never strayed away…he was the most loving and loyal companion. He didn't deserve a slow and painful death. #muerte #perro #justiciaporlosanimales

No details have been released about who shot Mozart or why it happened, but as dog lovers, we're hoping his death gets justified.

It is thought that the incident was a case of mistaken identity.

There was much concern over the welfare of the cat who was later brought on to The Late Late Show.
