Last night Six One viewers bid a sad farewell to Bryan Dobson, who has co-anchored the programme for more than 20 years.

However, it's not just Bryan who will be leaving the Six One news desk, as his co-anchor Sharon Ní Bheolain will also be taking up new roles within RTÉ.

Sharon, who started her career with RTÉ back in 1994, is set to present the Nine O'Clock News on rotation with Eileen Dunne, but will also remain as a presenter of Leaders Questions.

And while Bryan will join the Morning Ireland team on-air from November 1, Sharon will be the new presenter of Crimecall on RTÉ One.

So, who will replace the Six One dream team?

Well, RTÉ News today announced that Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry will take up the reins on the RTÉ Six One News from January 2018.

Broadcaster Keelin Shanley who currently presents News at One on RTÉ Radio 1 and Crimecall on RTÉ One, will be joined by RTÉ's current Washington Correspondent Caitriona Perry, as co-presenters on the flagship programme.

Announcing the new appointments, Director of RTÉ News & Current Affairs Jon Williams said: "For over a decade, Bryan and Sharon have set the standard for TV News in Ireland and I couldn't be more grateful and more excited as each embarks on new challenges for RTÉ News."

"I’m thrilled that Keelin and Caitriona will bring their intellect, competitive drive, and focus on storytelling to RTÉ's Six One News."

"In a news environment where we are bombarded by opinions and half-truths all day long, there’s no bigger challenge than to make sense of it all on Six One – and no better new presenting team to do so."

Times are a-changing, ladies.

Tonight, television viewers across Ireland will tune in to see Bryan Dobson deliver the Six One News headlines one last time.

After 21 years as co-anchor, the legendary broadcaster has set his sights on Ireland's radio waves where he will join co-presenters Rachael English, Dr Gavin Jennings and Audrey Carville as a main anchor of RTÉ Radio One's Morning Ireland from next week.

Not one to make a “big fuss”, Bryan has said he will celebrate his new career move by heading out for a meal with co-presenter Sharon Ni Bheoláin, followed by a “few drinks” with their colleagues.

According to reports, an RTÉ insider said: “Bryan was reluctant to make a big deal about leaving because, the way he sees it, he's only moving across the room.”

“He would be happy enough with a low-key affair.”

Bryan's replacement is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but in the meantime it's understood a rotating schedule of news presenters will fill the role.

A number of presenters have already been tipped to succeed Dobson, including Ray Kennedy, David McCullough and Keelin Shanley.

Farewell Dobbo, you'll be missed.

If the rumours are to be believed, Bryan Dobson is set to leave the Six One News.

The news anchor will apparently move to RTÉ Radio, to host Morning Ireland, which is currently presented by Cathal Mac Coille and Colm Ó Mongáin.

According to The Sunday Independent, the move will be part of the recent changes being made in the station.

Even though it's always good to have a fresh start, we'll miss Bryan on the evening news as he has been presenting it since 1996.

This comes just after Sharon Ní Bheoláin revealed that Bryan earns up to €80,000 more than her a year.

She commented on the RTÉ gender pay gap over the weekend, telling The Sunday Independent, “I believe that I am well remunerated, but, for the record, my pay is still considerably less than that of Bryan’s."

Bryan has yet to confirm his departure.
