Momentous day as Ireland set to pass marriage equality referendum
It’s safe to say that the nation has been on tenterhooks for the past 24 hours, and the big moment is almost upon us, with the final referendum votes being counted.
So far, it is looking likely that the proposal on marriage equality will pass, with an overwhelming number of 'Yes' votes being counted at the polling stations so far today.
While early tallies looked positive for the Yes side from the outset, voters have still endured a nail-biting wait as the votes have been counted and checked throughout the day.
Commenting on the momentous voting result, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton said: “This is a great moment for Ireland. In a way we are becoming a rainbow nation where we have a huge amount of diversity…I want to thank everyone who voted – whether it was Yes or No. It was a great democratic day.”
Of course, yesterday also saw the people of Ireland voting on the proposal to lower the age of eligibility for presidential candidacy to 21 years. Judging by the voting counts so far, it looks as though voters have rejected the proposal.
What a truly momentous day for Ireland – it’s safe to say the Irish have made history.
