1 year on: Vigil to be held for Irish student Karen Buckley in Glasgow

One year on from the tragic death of Cork-native, Karen Buckley, former classmates and teachers from Glasgow Caledonian University will gather together to mark the sombre anniversary at a private ceremony in the Scottish city later today.

24-year-old Karen was studying to become an occupational therapist in the university's School of Health and Life Sciences when she was murdered by Alexander Pacteau after a night out with friends in Glasgow's Sanctuary nightclub last April.

The vigil, which will allow classmates, lecturers and university alumni to remember the popular nurse from Mourneabbey in north Cork, will be held at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Commenting on today's ceremony, Linda Sinclair of Scotland’s Radio Clyde said: "The university don’t want to give out too many details. They want it to be a very private service for Karen’s classmates and for the staff. They want to pay their tributes and respect to Karen a year on."

21-year-old Alexander Pacteau is currently serving a life sentence for Karen's murder.
