Some films, like Mamma Mia and Grease are famed for their entire soundtrack while other films may have a stand-out song which encapsulates the entire movie in just three to four minutes. Either way, the music that accompanies any film is an integral part of the whole production and when it’s epic, it’s really epic.

From horrors to tearjerkers, here are just five films that brought us some of the greatest movie tracks in recent decades. Goosebumps, anyone?

The Lion King
Where do we start? Elton John didn’t win Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes for his musical contribution to this 1994 Disney smash for nothing! 'Circle of Life', 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' and 'Hakuna Matata' bring us out in chills for all the right reasons. Nobody mention Mufasa. Sob.

 

The Bodyguard
“Aaaaaaand I!” Although written by Dolly Parton in the 70’s, Whitney totally made this song her own in this 1992 tearjerker. The emotion, the raw passion and those high notes makes this track one of our favourite movie theme songs of all time. Considered a guilty pleasure by some, but pleasure is pleasure, right?

 

Titanic
Yes, it was played to death and yes, Celine was a total drip, but you can’t tell us that you can listen to those opening notes without thinking of Rose and Jack’s ill-fated trip and whirlwind romance. Yeah, we thought so.   

 

The Exorcist
If the film itself wasn’t terrifying enough, we were then subjected to what might be the scariest instrumental piece of all time. The fact that we wouldn’t play 'Tubular Bells' if we were alone in the house goes to show the power of a perfect theme song. Now, turn it off.

 

Rocky
Many people mightn’t even know the name of this famous theme song, but you can be sure they’d be able to belt it out at a moment’s notice, if asked. Rocky’s anthemic theme song ‘Gonna Fly Now’ stands for hard work, persistence and courage. Is it on your gym playlist? It should be.
