12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o delivered a pretty emotional speech when she accepted her award for Best Breakout Performance at Essence magazine’s seventh annual Women in Hollywood luncheon.

The Oscar nominee talked openly about how, when she was a child, she “got teased and taunted about [her] skin” and often wished that it was lighter.

Talking at the lunch, Lupita said: “My one prayer to God was that I would wake up lighter skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of the mirror.”

The Mexican actress said that it wasn’t until she met Sudanese model, Alek Wek, that she started to feel comfortable in her own skin. Talking about Alek, the 30-year-old said: “I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me as beautiful.”

Lupita, who has won a Screen Actors Guild Award, hopes to inspire other young people. She says: “I hope that my presence on your screen and my face in magazines may lead you, young girls, on a beautiful journey.”

We won’t lie – the oul shtyle wasn’t the best at this year’s SAG awards.

That said, we managed to put together what we think were the winning outfits of the evening, but we’re hoping for better at the Oscars.

Sofia Vergara looked as wonderful as the SAG award itself in a clinging silver number.

Kerry Washington had us humming and hawing but in the end we decided it was too darn cute to leave out.

Amy Adams was probably the favourite in a stunning navy-blue number with shoulder detailing.

We thought the colour of Lupita Nyong’o’s dress was beautiful and the ornamentation around the neck really helped to pull the whole thing together.

The stars emerged in all their finery for last night’s Golden Globes; but who was dressed best?

We’ve picked our favourite outfits from the night from sparkling dresses to block colours; there was no theme on the red carpet to see last night, but there was certainly style!

Olivia Wilde displayed her pregnancy bump in Gucci; Dame Helen Mirren glistened in green Jenny Packham; Julianna Margulies, star of The Good Wife wore a beautifully shaped and gold embroidered gown by designer Andrew Gn whilst Lupita Nyong’o, star of 12 Years a Slave looked striking in a bright red Ralph Lauren gown.
