Everything you need to know about the blood moon this Friday

by

A blood moon is coming this week, and it could affect our behaviour.

The longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century is said to happen this Friday, July 27th. So, prepare yourself for a gorgeous view of a bright, scarlet-coloured moon for a total of 1 hour and 43 minutes, according to Forbes.

The moon will hide in Earth’s shadow while the sun shines on the planet’s opposite side, causing a lunar eclipse.

A blood moon’s red tinge is due to the effect of sunlight scattering that reaches the moon in an indirect way. (There is a fact to memorise and impress your friends with this weekend).

This phenomenon is extremely rare for July, especially considering the lunar event’s length.

If you want to track the blood moon and see when the best time to watch it is, go to timeanddate.com. We recommend planning a 'blood moon' party on the roof with themed, decadent drinks like Bloody Marys and red wine.

How will this eclipse effect us on a personal level?

It has long been debated if human behaviour is linked to full moons.

What we do know is that medical professionals and police officers say a full moon is their busiest night of the year, and an American study found that 'events associated with human behaviour, such as traffic accidents, crimes, and suicides, appeared to be influenced by the lunar cycle.'

“One survey in the USA found that about 40 percent of the general population, and 80 percent of mental health professionals, believe that the phase of the moon affects human behaviour,” said scientist Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki on ABC.

“And yet, 99 percent of the evidence says that the moon has no effect on human behaviour.”

However, there is proof that the increased amount of light from the blood moon can disturb people’s sleep pattern.

According to an American study, this can result in stress and overtiredness the following morning. There are also some who believe that the eclipse can amplify the symptoms in those with mental illness.

‘The lunar cycle has an impact on human reproduction, in particular fertility, menstruation, and birth rate.'

Therefore, it is tricky to tell whether the lunar eclipse this Friday will affect our moods or not.

Bustle said that those who are signs Aquarius, Capricorn, or Leo could experience behavioural changes during the blood moon

Just in case, make sure to draw those shades tightly closed and be extra careful if you have the sesh this weekend.
