No matter how powerful the woman or prestigious her role, there exists a compulsion within the media to focus on the aesthetic.

Whether reporting on a promotion, fall from grace or contribution to global politics, it’s rare that coverage doesn’t – at some point – turn its attention to the woman in question’s appearance.

And, as we all know, the focus on clothing, hair style and heel height are intensified if the woman at the centre of the piece happens to the wife or partner of a prominent male public figure.

Turning that trend on its head this week, a writer for The Metro has given a thorough assessment of Philip May – the husband of Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May.

In an article which has been shared a staggering 33,000 times,  Nicole Morley satirised typical reporting of this nature, writing: ”Theresa May became Britain’s new prime minister, but her husband’s big fashion moment stole the show.”

"Stepping into the limelight as First Man, Philip May showcased a sexy navy suit with a flourish of pinstripe,” she wrote. “Round glasses perched on his nose accentuated his amazing bone structure – no doubt one of the assets he used to help him to bag his wife.”

“Philip elongated his pins with a pair of black brogues as he accompanied his wife to step over the threshold of their new home – 10 Downing Street,” she added, and the internet can’t get enough.

Taking to Twitter to add their voice to the fashion moment of the week, members of the public continued the trend.

"Pressing question of the day is where does Philip May get his shoes? " wrote one Twitter user  "Is he fit to display British fashion to the world?”

"As First Man, or First Hubby as some are already calling him, Philip will no doubt have been expecting his fashion choices to go under the microscope," Nicole concluded.
