Frankenfish… has a nice ring to it, NOT. As a matter of fact it sounds a bit scary, but now the lovely Frankenfish has become available to eat.

The US Food and Drug Administration approved AquAdvantage Salmon this week as the first genetically modified food from animals.

The AquAdvantage salmon made by AquaBounty Technologies, which has been dubbed Frankenfish contains a gene that allows the fish to grow faster than wild or farm-raised Atlantic salmon.

It has taken almost two decades for this decision to be made.

Bernadette Dunham, director for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement, “The FDA has thoroughly analysed and evaluated the data and information submitted by AquaBounty Technologies regarding AquAdvantage Salmon and determined that they have met the regulatory requirements for approval, including that food from the fish is safe to eat.”

We're not sure how well this is going to go down as more and more people are becoming aware of what is actually in their food. Only time will tell with this one.
