The nearly-naked red carpet trend is definitely not going away soon!

Following all the daring outfits from this years VMA red carpet, we want to know where it all started.

When did wearing next to nothing at a high profile event become TOTALLY acceptable?

So, we wandered down through the years to find out where it all began – and a few of them may surprise you:

Barbra Streisand, 1969

We can thank Barbra for setting off the daring red carpet trend. The singer and actress scooped the award for Best Actress in her role in Funny Girl at the 41st Academy Awards and wore a revealing outfit (at the time) to accept it.

 Cher, 1986

Cher was adamant  that she didn't want to look like a "housewife in an evening gown" and in this outfit, designed by Bob Mackie, she certainly looked nothing of the sort. Her risky look put her on the front of every newspaper the next day.

Kate Moss, 1993

Ah, the famous naked-dress. Back in the Nineties, Kate Moss caught everyone's attention in this transparent floor-length dress by Lisa Bruce. She accessorised the silver get-up with a pair of black underwear and model pal Naomi Campbell.

Liz Hurley, 1994

Who could forget this dress? Worn to accompany her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral the Versace number launched the actress to fame.

Jennifer Lopez, 2000

Ever wondered why Google created Google Images, a search engine specifically for pictures? This dress. J-Lo's iconic green Versace dress caused such a stir at the 42nd Grammy Awards that Google couldn't cope with the world wanting a glimpse of it. Versace really like the near-naked dresses, huh?

Victoria Beckham, 2005

Three years before launching her own fashion line, Victoria rocked up to the Swavorski Fashion Rocks event in a daring Roberto Cavalli green and blue cut-out dress. We're thankful she no longer sports this kind of look!

Lady Gaga, 2010

Lady Gaga wore a few well-placed pieces of lace attached to a sheer jumpsuit when she attended the Brit Awards in 2010. Admittedly, her wig was bigger than anything she was wearing on her body.

Rihanna, 2014

Rihanna made fashion history when she hit the red carpet for the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York wearing a Adam Selman dress beaded with no less than 216,000 Swarovski crystals. We think she might be a bit nippy in this…

Beyoncé, 2015

Beyoncé certainly knows how to make an entrance when she rocked up to the Met Gala in a daring Givenchy Haute Couture gown. With her bum and boobs barely covered, there's no wonder she caused a stir worldwide.

Miley Cyrus, 2015

Miley hosted this years MTV VMAs wearing no less than 11 outfits, but this one caught our attention the most. The Versace number left little to the imagination, from the tiny leather harness and dripping strings of crystals that barely contained her modesty, this has to be the most daring red carpet look yet.
