Sam Smith is currently on the Australian leg of his concert tour, but he has been forced to cancel all remaining Australian concerts due to severe vocal chord issues.

The Stay With Me singer said he had been feeling "vocally exhausted" of late, and doctors finally realised he had suffered a small haemorrhage on his vocal chords.

In a statement released via Instagram earlier this morning, Sam said he was under doctor's orders not to perform for the next while. "The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue," he wrote.

"I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour."

The singer performed his first gig in Sydney last night and was due to appear there again tonight, with further gigs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth also lined up.

After Australia Sam is set to perform in Japan, followed by US and European dates in May and June.

While the Australian gigs are definitely cancelled and will be rescheduled for December 2015, it's not clear what will come of the rest of Sam's tour. "I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me," wrote the singer.

The 22-year-old star has been on a gruelling health and fitness regime over the last  couple of months, and has debuted a noticeably slimmer figure of late. Last month he revealed he had dropped 14 pounds in just two weeks after enlisting the services of celebrity nutritionist Amelia Freer.
