According to research, today is the most depressing day of the year.

For the past few years, psychologists and scientists have blamed things like gloomy weather and post-Christmas debts on the population being so blue.

But, just because scientists say that today is an unhappy day, doesn't mean you have to be glum until 12 tonight.

So, to beat the blues, here's a few small things that will cheer you up:

1. Listen to your favourite music

You can never beat listening to your fave tunes, whether they're upbeat or slow, music can always put you in a good mood.

2. Call your BFF and have a full-on rant

This rant can be about college, work, your boyfriend, or pretty much whatever you feel like. Letting things out is good, and having someone to listen is even better.

3. Write down what you want to do

We know we all try to make new year's resolutions, but sometimes we just can't stick to them. Write down what you want for yourself at this very moment and it might give you a bit of clarity and cheer you up.

4. Watch your favourite TV show

Go old-school and watch a bit of Friends, or catch up on the latest Game of Thrones. Either way, watching your fave characters for an hour full of drama is always good.

5. Cook your favourite meal

Food is another thing that can instantly cheer you up. Whether your favourite is ice cream or a steak, just go for it.

6. Don't feel like cooking? Order in

If cooking alone makes you feel sad, scrap that and order in your favourite take-away. Pizza, chipper, Chinese… We're happy and hungry just thinking about it.

7. Treat yourself

This doesn't have to be anything extravagant. Seen a pair of cosy slippers? Get them. Fancy a new scent? You deserve it.

8. Watch your favourite movie

Because who doesn't love getting into a Mean Girls buzz.

9. Go for a long walk with someone who listens

Taking some time out with your bestie, sister or your mam and just relaxing will help keep your worries at bay.

10. Take a bath

And go all out. Light a few candles, play some soothing music, add some infused bath oils and you're good to go. There's no better way to end Blue Monday than a nice bubbly bath.
