This morning, the inquest into the Buncrana pier tragedy will begin.

In March of last year, five family members lost their lives when their car became submerged in the waters of Lough Swilly in County Donegal.

The car they were travelling in plunged into the water, killing all passengers but one.

Those who died were the driver Sean McGrotty aged 49, his sons Mark and Evan, aged 8 and 12, his partner’s mother Ruth Daniels, and her daughter Jodie Lee aged 14.

The only survivor was four-month-old Rionaghach-Ann.

She was saved when Davitt Walsh bravely swam out to the sinking car in an effort to rescue those trapped inside.

The inquest aims to obtain better understanding of what happened that day.

This morning, the court will hear from those who witnessed what happened.
