More popular than TINDER?! What is the DEAL with Pokémon Go?!

by

If your social media feeds have been awash with Pokémon Go memes and you have no idea why, you’re not alone.

While many of us assumed Pokémon was the reserve of our childhood and as likely as light-up runners and rip-off tracksuit bottoms to rear its head again, this past weekend has proven just how wrong we were.

So, what’s the 411 exactly?

Basically, Pokémon Go allows people to catch Pokémon in real life with the help of augmented reality, and has proven so popular after initially being rolled out in Australia and New Zealand, its UK and international release have been delayed due to technical issues.

The game, which is a free-to-play mobile game, allows players to capture, battle, train and trade virtual Pokémon who appear around the world, and has basically sent every die-hard Pokémon fan over the edge.

While the creators – Niantic Labs – had anticipated interest in Pokémon’s first foray into the mobile world, they weren’t expecting servers would crash as a result of the hype surrounding the game.

According to Forbes, despite the fact it has yet to be released world-wide, the newly-released game is set to surpass Twitter in daily active users on Android.

Figures indicate that within 48 hours of its release, Pokémon Go had been installed on 5.6 percent of all Android devices in the US – making it more popular than Tinder.

Now just imagine what will happen when it actually goes global…
