Former celebrity publicist, Max Clifford, has died aged 74.

After collapsing in his cell in Littlehey Prison in Cambridgeshire on Thursday and again on Friday, he was taken to hospital where he suffered cardiac arrest.

Mr. Clifford has been serving an eight-year jail sentence after he was found guilty of eight indecent assaults on women and girls between 1977 and 1985.

He was the first person convicted as a result of Operation Yewtree – a British police investigation launched after emerged that the entertainer Jimmy Savile had been a serial sexual predator for years.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice confirmed his death and revealed that an investigation had been launched.

"As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman," the spokesman said.

"Our condolences are with Mr Clifford's family at this difficult time."
