Formula One star Jenson Button and his wife Jessica Michibata were burgled while on holiday in St. Tropez according to spokesman who explained the news last night.

The couple who currently live in Monaco, had rented a villa in the Saint Tropez resort when they were robbed on Monday evening.

The thieves supposedly took belongings from the pair worth over €400,000 which included Jessica’s engagement ring which the The Sun reports is valued at €350,000.

The couple were apparently gassed while they slept while burglars entered the villa and took the valuables. French police say the villa had been under the watch of a gang for days before the incident took place.

Three of the couple’s friends who staying in the luxury home with the pair were also believed to have been left unconscious when a canister of anesthetic gas was let off into an air-conditioning vent.

A source has told The Sun this has become a very common way for criminals to enter houses without being noticed and “Jenson is convinced that’s what happened too. The burglars were in the same room as him and Jessica, rifling through all their drawers.”

Local police have interviewed the couple and their friends. It is thought that they will continue to try and identify the thieves using CCTV footage.

Jenson and Jessica were reportedly so shaken by the ordeal that they packed their bags and left Saint Tropez just hours after the realised they had been robbed.

French police are understood to believe the raid was the work of two criminals working together and who had been stalking the couple and their friends during their stay in the villa.

Jenson’s spokesperson has said: “Whilst unharmed, everyone involved is unsurprisingly shaken by the events.”
