Your skin is wrecked after summer. Here’s how to fix it.
Irish skin has had a proper summer of it. Between the heat advisories, the sea swims, the factor 50 that somehow still wasn’t enough and the UV levels that had no business being this high on this island, our faces have taken a battering. And while that sun-kissed glow was very much the vibe in July, what it’s left behind in August is a little less glamorous.
Dehydrated, dull, tight and sensitive — that’s the state of play for a lot of Irish skin right now. Met Éireann’s 2026 seasonal outlook flagged above-average temperatures running from May, with some regions clocking UV intensity more commonly associated with the Mediterranean. Which sounds great in theory and feels significantly less great when your skin is flaking and your usual moisturiser just isn’t cutting it.
The issue comes down to skin barrier damage. Sun exposure, salt water, wind and heat all chip away at the skin’s protective layer, the thing that keeps moisture in and irritants out. Once that’s compromised, no amount of serum layering will fully do the job until you actually address the damage.
French skincare house Yon-Ka Paris has put together a three-step post-summer recovery ritual designed to do exactly that — and the timing feels very right.
Step one: get rid of the summer build-up

Gommage Yon-Ka gentle botanical polish keeps skin smooth and clear.
The first step is Gommage Yon-Ka (€49.50 / £44, 50ml), and if you’ve never tried a pilling exfoliator, this is the one to start with. Rather than gritty scrubbing, you apply a generous layer to clean dry skin, let it dry for a few minutes and then gently roll it off. It lifts away dead cells, sun cream residue, salt and general summer grime in a way that feels genuinely satisfying without leaving your skin pink and angry.
Formulated with carob and brown algae extracts, purifying lime essential oil and soothing white nettle, it’s a 4-in-1 exfoliating gel that resurfaces, purifies and soothes in one go. Vegetal glycerin keeps it hydrating rather than stripping, so it’s gentle enough for sensitised, post-sun skin — and safe to use around the eye contour area, which is not something you can say about most exfoliators.
Step two: drink up

Hydra N°1 Masque is a hydrating, repairing face mask for all skin types.
Once the surface is clear, the Hydra N°1 Masque (€54.50 / £48, 50ml) goes in. Made with 89% natural-origin ingredients, it delivers intense time-released hydration to skin that’s been left tight and moisture-depleted by the summer. A botanical complex of Imperata cylindrica, aloe vera and vegetal glycerin works alongside vitamins A, C, E, B5 and jojoba to plump and soften while visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines.
The real trick with this one is leaving it on overnight as a sleeping mask. Your skin does the bulk of its repair work while you sleep anyway, so pairing that with a properly hydrating treatment mask makes the whole process significantly more efficient. Wake up with noticeably softer, less stressed skin. Highly recommend doing this on a Sunday night before the week kicks off.
Step three: rebuild from scratch
The final step is where the real repair work happens. Serum Omega (€88.00 / £78, 30ml) is the newest addition to Yon-Ka’s Intensive range and it’s built specifically for barrier repair. Its oil-in-serum formula is rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids which help reinforce the skin’s lipid reserves and support the physiological barrier — that all-important first line of defence against dehydration and environmental aggressors.
It’s been clinically evaluated on dry and sensitised skin and shown to improve barrier function, reduce visible redness and ease tightness and that uncomfortable itching sensation that sun-damaged skin can develop. The formula is vegan, made in France and composed of 99% natural-origin ingredients. Because it’s a rich oil-based formula, it works best applied as the final step in your routine, layered over your lighter water-based products to lock everything in.
Yon-Ka recommend working all three steps into a weekly routine through September and October to give your skin a proper chance to recover before the cold air and central heating start doing their own kind of damage. All three products are available through authorised Yon-Ka Paris stockists across Ireland and at yonka.ie.
Honestly, your September skin is already thanking you.
