Kylie Jenner has been usurped from her throne as the queen of Instagram by a rather unconventional social media phenomenon.

Instagram project @world_record_egg has been working to overtake Kylie Jenner’s world record for the most likes picture on the social media platform.

Kylie’s Insta snap of newborn daughter Stormi has held the record at 18,000,000 likes until the egg project began.

The page hosts only one image, a simple shot of a plain hen’s egg on a white background.

‘Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram,' the picture declares.

'Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.'

The egg managed to achieve the world record in less than 10 days, after being posted on January 4th by appealing to the online site’s trolling culture.

It now has over 24 million likes, overtaking Kylie by a whopping 6 million votes.

The project was set up by an unknown entity called #EggGang.

They released a statement after breaking the record, saying: 'This is madness. What a time to be alive.'

'Thank you all so much for all of your support and messages. I'm gonna try and get back to as many of you as possible. But for now I need to sleep.'

'It doesn't have to end here though, we're only just getting started.'

The aftermath of the project had led to Kylie Jenner receiving a tad more trolling than usual, with fans of Eugene the Viral Egg (yes she has a name) leaving a trail of egg emojis over on the makeup moguls Insta content.

Kylie however, is taking it all on the chin.

The reality TV teen uploaded a meme video to her 123 million followers, showing the mum of one smashing an egg on the ground.

‘Take that little egg’ she captioned the post.

None of members of the Kardashian family liked the egg’s insta post.
