Kerrygold is causing uproar in the US (and could land someone in jail)

Shop keepers in the US state of Wisconsin are facing possible jail time for selling Kerrygold Butter.

The law, that is 40 years old, means that all butter used for commercial purposes needs to be put before a panel of experts to grade it.

But, because Kerrygold is made in Ireland, it does not go through the same regulatory controls as many products made in the US.

However, according to local news outlet TMJ4, having a high-fat diet (Paleo/Caveman) is popular around that state, and many residents aren't happy about the outdated law.

Jean Smith, who lives in Wisconsin, told reporters that she has to smuggle Kerrygold to her home via cooler bags.

“I feel suspicious. Who are you trying to protect here? Are you protecting the consumers, are you protecting Wisconsin dairies?”

She added: “I want to please ask whoever it is that’s preventing me from getting butter in our stores here to stop it, to stop it.

Anyone who is caught with the glorious butter could face a $500 fine or a jail time of three months. Ouch.
