Avril reveals the reason she was bedridden for five months

Avril Lavigne has opened up about why she fell ill and was actually bedridden for five months last year.

The singer was speaking to People magazine when she described how her 30th birthday did not go according to plan: “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed.”

With doctors unable to diagnose Avril’s illness, she endured months of extreme tiredness until she was eventually found to be suffering from Lyme disease.

Scarily, Avril thought she wouldn’t make it through her debilitating illness: “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying … There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand.”

Now, almost fully better, the singer says she can’t wait to get back to her fans: “They get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply.”

What is Lyme disease? The disease is spread by the bite of a tick that is infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. It is the fastest growing vector borne disease.

Peope's reaction to the bacteria can differ greatly, with some breaking out in a rash a week after the bite while the disease can lie dormant in many others and flare up in times of stress.

We're so glad Avril is feeling better and can't wait for her return on the music scene.
