Tributes are pouring in for 98FM’s Johnny Lyons this morning

98FM’s sports broadcaster Johnny Lyons has passed away.

The 98FM Sports Editor was the host of the much-loved Now That’s What I Call Sports show on Sundays following his stint on Today FM’s Premier League Live.

In a statement made on their Facebook page the radio station informed fans that he passed suddenly and peacefully at his home. “Everyone at 98FM is heartbroken at the death of our dear colleague and great friend, Johnny Lyons. Johnny died suddenly and peacefully at his home in Dublin," the station said.

The presenter had been off work with a broken ankle and was due to return to the office next week.

"Johnny has been the backbone of our sports team for over 20 years. His larger than life personality and passion for sport defined Johnny for so many. We will miss you so much. Rest in peace," the statement continued.

Johnny, who was in his forties, made his debut with 98FM in 1996 after he brought his demo in for station bosses.

A highlight of his career was his interview with former Celtic striker John Hartson. It took place after Hartson’s battle with cancer and Johnny was widely praised for the interview. It was a moment described as a highlight of his career.

98FM's chief executive Keith McCormack said the entire station was devastated at the news and expressed his sympathies for the Lyons family:

"He was a huge part of the 98FM family and will be dearly missed."
