Social media app Instagram will hide the total number of 'likes' which posts in Ireland receive in a trial to analyse whether users prefer a less competitive social media environment.

Users themselves will be able to see how many 'likes' their own posts get, but not those of other Instagram users' posts.

A spokesman for the app said; “We are testing this because we want followers to focus on the photos and videos shared, not how many likes they get."

They added; “We don’t want Instagram to feel like a competition. We hope to learn whether this change can help people focus less on likes and more on telling their story.”

The company began testing this new feature in Canada in May, emphasising that the focus should be on the photos and videos themselves rather then the numerical results.

The trial is now being extended to Irish users, with the move likely being welcomes by parents and childrens' welfare organisations due to the negative effects on self-esteem associated with Instagram.

Instagram undoubtedly encourages people to portray an idealised version of their lives among their peers, seeking popularity of friends and acquaintances.

A new Canadian study of 3,826 teenagers discovered that social media may be associated with adolescent depression, as young people compare themselves with filtered, unrealistic images of others.

Instagram users will still be shown the number of comments that other users' posts attracts, which could be used as a proxy for popularity.

Instagram has been seen as the least controversial major social media platform, seeing as Facebook's meddling with elections and 'fake news' has gotten them in trouble, as well as YouTube and Twitter's issues with hate speech.

Tara Hopkins, head of public policy, EMEA at Instagram said; “We want Instagram to be a place where people feel comfortable expressing themselves."

She added; “This includes helping people to focus on the photos and videos they share, not how many likes they get.

"We are now rolling the test out to more countries so we learn more from our global community and see how this can benefit people's experiences on Instagram.”

Taylor Swift shocked fans earlier this week by deleting the entirety of her social media accounts.

There is major speculation that this wipe out means that Taylor is planning something big, like a new album.

Now, the country music-turned-pop songstress has had her fandom in uproar, as she has began leaking videos of what see to be snakes onto her Instagram.

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

The second video has already been viewed almost three million times, and it was only uploaded this afternoon.

The Taylor Swift fandom is essentially writhing in excitement and agony as they wait in anticipation for the announcement of whatever it is Taylor is plotting.

Fans cannot help but point out how Taylor is using Kim Kardashian's snake emoji slagging to her advantage in the launch of whatever these videos lead up to.

Most fans think that Taylor will drop new music this coming Friday.

Others have said that the snake-like creature looks like it could be a dragon thanks to the pronounced scales covering the body of the creature.

Whatever is happening, it's bound to be something big.

Director Joseph Kahn also tweeted a smiley face in response to the videos.

Kahn has directed a number of Tyalor's music videos before, so fans are hoping that this confirms the new music rumours.

Winding down is becoming harder and harder these days as many of us find it increasingly difficult to switch off or detach after a hectic day.

Old reliables like chilling out in front of a movie or reading a book just don't have the same appeal as our reliance on email and instant messaging increases, and ultimately distracts us from the task at hand.

However, it looks like millions of people in recent years have found a failsafe way to tune out or drift off, and it's with the help of something known as ASMR.

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterised by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine, and can be brought about by the sound of hair brushing, hushed tones, page turning or keyboard tapping… among many others.

Indeed, YouTube is awash with videos from all over the world which feature individuals role-playing in a variety of situations including hair appointments, eye examinations and hotel check-ins.

The thing is, though, you either get it or you don't. But if you do, here we have – for your ASMR pleasure – some of the most popular.

1. "This was my very first ASMR video! Knocks me out almost every time!"

2. "This is the best ASMR video I've seen in a long time."

3. "It's so hard explaining this to people."

4. "Your voice is so soothing, you're already one of my fav asmrtists!"

5. "Does anyone else feel that it tickles your back?"

Ah, Disney movies.

We watched them all as kids, and honestly, most of the videos are probably lying in the back of your parent's attic.

beauty and the beast

If you thiiiink they might be sitting in a box somewhere, root them out because they could be worth a good bit of money.

Pretty52 did a little research on Ebay recently and found out that Disney VHS tapes are being sold for hundreds, if not thousands of Euro.

cinderella

A copy of Beauty and the Beast went for £4035 (€4786). It probably sold for so much because it was never opened – the tape is still on the side of the box.

And an untouched Cinderella? That went for £3632 (€4309).

fox and the hound

However, if you have opened your VHS tape (honestly, what were people doing not opening them?) fear not, because you could make some serious bank too.

A Fox and the Hound tape went for £363 (€430), while The Little Mermaid sold for £403 (€479).

If that's not enough to convince you, imagine all the make-up and clothes you could buy with that money?!

People watch YouTube videos for hours upon hours everyday. And if you're a regular YouTube watcher on you laptop, there's a handy way to speed things up a little… or slow them down.

Yep, there's a speed button on the bottom right hand corner of the video, which allows you to choose whether you want to make your YouTube videos go a little bit faster or slower.

The former is quite handy if you just want to speed through videos and get to the good parts without skipping over the entire video. And the latter is great if you need to look out for something and don't want to miss it.

On the settings button at the bottom right-hand corner of the player, you will see speed as its third option. Clicking it will give you the option to slow it down to 0.25x or 0.5x or increase the speed to 1.25x, 1.5x and 2x.

Slowing it down is also quite handy if you need to take a screen grab!

Miranda Kerr took to Instagram to ask her fans, “Who doesn’t love a good blow?”

In the video, the Australian beauty is seen cleaning up a set of steps with a leaf blower. We think it’s safe to say that Ms Kerr is one of the only people who can do some garden work and look that glamorous in the process.

Who doesn't love a good blow

A video posted by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on

We know we certainly don’t look like that when we’re cleaning the house, that’s for sure!

The video was actually an outtake from the 32-year-old’s Royal Albert photo shoot. In the clip, the mother-of-one can be seen giggling and playing around with friends as she gives the steps a once over with the leaf blower.

Ms Kerr took to Instagram earlier in the day to share more snaps from the shoot. She can be seen lounging in a hammock with a glass of wine and captioned the shot, “Sneak peek from my Miranda Kerr for Royal Albert shoot today!”

She continued, “Wine and champagne glasses plus beautiful vases are just a few of the new additions I’ve designed for the collection.”

Hmm, it looks as if Shakira’s husband, Gerard Piqué, is a little insecure about her raunchy music videos!

Talking to Billboard, Shakira explained that she is no longer able to create music videos with men.

Known for her risqué videos and dancing it seems as if that may all be a thing of the past for the singer, unless of course another woman is involved.

Here is what she said about her husband’s stance on music videos:

“He’s very territorial, and since he no longer lets me do them with men, well, I have to do them with women … it’s more than implied in our relationship that I can’t do videos like I used to. It’s out of the question – which I like by the way, I like that he protects his turf and values me, in a way that the only person that the would ever let graze my thigh would be Rihanna.”

If Gerard is upset by his wife dancing with male dancers in a music video then he is lucky she isn’t an actress who may have to star in a steamy sex scene!
