Fashion gals, we feel your pain.

It's that time of the year when it's too cold to wear bare legs with a skirt, yet, tights are basically your arch nemesis.

They're itchy, scratchy, awkward and they bring back memories of your mother pulling them up on you before school – something we all really hated (no wonder we got so many holes in ours).

Well, we're here to tell you that they can actually look really cool, and all you need is a killer outfit to team them with.

Here's a bit of inspo to get your tight-wearing self off to a great start:

Style Notes: A pair of sheer or light-coloured tights is a fun way to offset an otherwise mostly black look. If you're feeling the leather vibes this season, tone it down with a pair like this.

Rejoice! Because it's finally no-shaving season… or in other words, it's tights season!

Not having to care about what your legs look like is one of the reasons we love winter, but we'll be honest; wearing black tights day in, day out can get pretty boring.

With nineties fashion staples populating stores across the country, it’s no surprise that mesh crop tops are dominating the blogosphere.

But rather than add another item of clothing to your already bulging shopping cart, why not try make your own?

A four-year-old YouTube video by ItsMyRayeRaye demonstrates how easily a mesh crop top can be crafted from a pair of ordinary tights.

The brief clip encourages viewers to “look cute” and “save money” by snipping the feet off their old tights, before cutting a v-shape in the crotch.

Ladies, it's that simple.

Winter wardrobes are pretty amazing.

Who doesn’t love giant scarfs and coats that make you feel powerful? Sometimes it can almost be easier to deal with winter fashion than summer, because we know that we will need that jumper at some point today.

The only thing that really bothers us about winter dressing is the tights issue.

Tights can be exceptionally easy to ruin with a single snag. However, now there is a genius way to avoid this for the entire winter season.

If you dampen them with water, then freeze before wearing them for the first time, they'll last longer, according to Refinery29

“When you buy a new pair of tights, run them under water for a few seconds, squeeze out the excess, and then freeze them overnight in a plastic bag.”

Can you imagine reaching into the freezer to pull out something for dinner and realising you’ve been defrosting tights? Not exactly a gourmet meal, but who knows these days.

“When you take them out of the freezer, let them come to room temp gradually before wearing. You only have to do this prior to the first wear, and it's said to extend the life of your tights.”

Tights can be a wardrobe staple in any season, and with our chilly winter weather sometimes tights are the way to go.

So, making them last longer will save you both money and frustration. There is nothing worse than realising you have a massive ladder in your tights just before you walk out the door.

We might be giving this a go.

A few fashion experts have given their advice on what’s acceptable and what’s not when it comes to wearing tights.

Their rules state that:

  • If wearing nude coloured tights they should match your skin tone exactly.
  • Avoid bright colours and patterns
  • Black tights should be as light a sheen as possible
  • Never wear tights between April and October.

We don’t know what planet, or rather, what warm country they’re living in, but we take issue with these rules. Instead, here are our Irish rules for covering up your legs.

– Wear tights at all times. Middle of summer? Wear tights. In the office? Wear tights. On the town? Wear tights. Wearing shorts? Wear tights.

Tights are the Irish girl’s best friend. It doesn’t matter what time of year, what time of day – it is too cold to have bare legs.

– Light black tights are nice, but completely black is great. In fact, we want to be able to substitute the tights for leggings on a cold day and not have anyone notice.

– Wear whatever colours you want, the madder the better. You can probably trust the pastiness of your legs underneath to mute the bright tones.

– Nude tights not only should be darker than your own colour, they probably have to be. If you’re like us, nude is several shades darker than your natural winter skin. Plus, easier than fake tan, right?
