Matthew McConaghey is spreading his wings and branching out by joining his old university as a professor, no less.

The actor and producer is set to start working in the Radio-Television-Film department at the University of Texas at Austin in September and will teach a class on script to screen film production.

He's been teaching the class at the university since 2015 with director Scott Rice after the actor developed the curriculum looking at the stages of film production from behind the scenes.

He said: "It's the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them.

"Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus."

The 49-year-old graduated in 1993 with a film degree from the university, and went on to win an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. The McConaissance is real, gals.

The actor is renowned for his roles in The Wolf of Wall Street, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and TV series True Detective.

Noah Isenberg, chair of the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the university, said: "He has a passion for teaching, and for all things cinematic, that is palpable, even infectious."

Jay Bernhardt, Dean of Moody College, where McConaughey will work, said: "We are proud to welcome Professor McConaughey to officially join our world-class faculty.

"Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators."

35 people have died due to the extreme weather conditions caused by Hurricane Harvey, and a number of others are missing.

Hurricane Harvey has caused havoc in not only Texas, but now the state of Louisiana as well.

After causing mass flooding in the Lone Star State, the tropical storms record breaking rain fall has now set its sights on the neighbouring state.

People are fleeing their homes in Louisiana to seek shelter from the storm, much like a vast number of Texas residents currently in emergency shelters after being displaced by the storm.

32,000 people are in shelters in the wake of the storm.

'Catastrophic and life threatening flooding will continue in and around Houston, Beaumont/Port Arthur, eastward into southwest Louisiana for the rest of the week,' said the US National Hurricane Centre, according to RTÉ.

The storm has been moved from hurricane status to tropical depression status.

It is estimated that upwards of 30,000 people will need housing in shelters in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Those seeking shelter have had their homes flooded by the ever increasing inches of rain which are covering some areas.

A further 450,000 Texans are set to seek some form of disaster assistance.

It is reported that up to eight people have lost their lives to the disaster.

Some areas face further feet of flooding, as the hurricane continues to pour water down on the residents.

According to The Scientific American, the storm is now sustaining itself over Texas, rather than using the ocean to draw up water to turn into rain.

'Harvey has dropped so much water over such a large area of southeastern Texas that the storm is pulling that water back up into itself and dumping it again as more rain.'

Abortions will no longer be available under insurance policies for women in Texas.

Instead, women will be forced to take out additional policies to cover their potential future abortions in cases of rape, incest or personal choice elective abortion.

The bill, dubbed by many as the 'rape insurance' bill, was signed into law this week.

Many people feel that due to this bill, survivors of rape will be forced to pay out more in their insurance polices, and women in general will need to insure their bodies ahead of the potential threat of rape or incest.

'Wtf is rape insurance? They have to insure their bodies like their damn cars???? What the f***????' said one Twitter user. Others suggested that if women are forced to pay rape insurance, men should have to pay potential rapist insurance.

Abortion is already banned from insurance policies in states such as  Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Utah, according to a report from Guttmacher.org.

'As a firm believer in Texas values I am proud to sign legislation that ensures no Texan is ever required to pay for a procedure that ends the life of an unborn child,' said Governor Abbott in a statement from the Texas Governor's Office.

'This bill prohibits insurance providers from forcing Texas policy holders to subsidise elective abortions.'

'I am grateful to the Texas legislature for getting this bill to my desk, and working to protect innocent life this special session.'

There have already been calls to repeal the bill.

This is an emerging news story…

At least one person is believed to have died and “multiple victims” have been reported in separate shooting incidents in Austin, Texas this morning.

Austin Police Department raised the alarm with a series of tweets warning locals to “stay away from downtown” because an “active shooter incident” was underway.

They reported that “separate shootings within the same area” were occurring.

According to ABC News, the location of the shooter or shooters is still unknown.

The Sun has reported that a woman in her thirties has died as a result of the incident which occurred around 3am local time in the Sixth Street entertainment district.

Reports suggest that two other women and one man were also injured in the attack.

Both scenes have now been described by police as “secure”.

For some folk, the thought of hurling yourself down a water-slide at significant speed fills them with dread.

For others, a holidays or hot day wouldn't be complete without one.

However, both camps will be unnerved by a recent video, which shows some poor hapless young man shoot off a slide – and onto the rocky terrain below.

Ouch. Yes, suffice to say that it makes for hide-behind-your-hands viewing.

The accident happened at a home just east of Austin in Texas and was – thankfully for the internet – captured on a phone and later posted to Facebook along with the hashtags #failvideo #brokenarm #notdead.

The footage shows David Salmon shoot down the slide, subsequently taking a turn too fast. His body rides up the side, and – airborne – he can next be seen tumbling 3metres over the edge.

“I'd gone down a few times and it was fast,” he has now said. “But this time, I just couldn't slow down, even threw my arm out, and went right over the edge.”

He added: “For a split second, I was like oh no. And then it was like a hard crash, and the rest was all just blurry.”

Mr Salmon furthermore told Fox 4 News that said he was conscious throughout most of the incident. Even though he remains in a lot of pain now, he also knows it could’ve been so much worse.

Still, in the aftermath he's been left with a broken left arm, and several fractured ribs; he has significant scrapes and bruises on his lower back, shoulders and side.

“It was excruciating,” David unsurprisingly said of the incident.

He and his friends had rented the Texas house for a long weekend and were taking turns on the slide last Sunday evening when the accident occurred.

“I could have easily broken my neck or my back,” David concluded. “And this could have been way worse.”

It was reported over the weekend that Rob Kardashian drove all the way to Texas to collect his new girlfriend, Blac Chyna, from jail after she was arrested for being drunk in public.

A source has confirmed to E! News that Rob drove from Los Angeles to Austin. He then drove her back home to California where they were spotted together again Monday morning in Beverly Hills.

The model was seen getting out of Rob's Bentley and heading into an office block. Rob waited in the car for her, donning a messy beard and baseball cap.

We can see this being the first of many outings with Blac. Maybe he'll stop being a hermit now that he has a new girl… or maybe not.

We'll have to wait and see how this all works out.

Those of you considering booking a holiday this summer, please forget any other destinations you had in mind.

Because this water slide in Texas is where we all NEED to be.

The video for this water slide has received more than 6million views in less than a week – and for once it's not just the featured bathing-suit clad people that's caught the attention of the internet.

The Royal Flush is certainly not for the faint-hearted: you gather serious pace going down its steep slope before you encounter the ramps at the bottom which propell you into the air.

That might sound scary, but it looks like the most fun ever!

But seriously, if this is what all people in Texas look like, that's enough for us to book a flight.

Awww! We always knew that Ed Sheeran was a big softie at heart – and now there’s yet more proof.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter was mid-way through a performance of his hit All Of The Stars in Austin, Texas this week when he noticed a man waving around a sign signalling his intentions for the evening. Being a decent sort of guy, Ed invited him and his unsuspecting girlfriend up on stage to join him.

Cue the man sharing a heart-warming speech with the audience, complete with glowing references to his other half – all peppered with plenty of Ed Sheeran nods too.

“Just Thinking Out Loud here,” he began, before adding that his girlfriend is “amazing” and “talented,” and “so beautiful, inside and out.”

He then, you guessed it, got down on one knee and officially popped the question.

Thankfully, his emotional-wreck of a girlfriend (we would be too, frankly) said “yes!” – with Ed (bless him) cheering manically in the background, while simultaneously wiping away his own tears.

Mr Sheeran later took to Twitter to share the moment with his fans, admitting that he “welled up”.

We’re welling up right now, Ed.
