As the month of May passes by, it's easy for our minds to wander to the tropical climates of far off countries.

Summer promises a long stretch in the evenings, flights to foreign lands and a need to dress for water-based activities.

Whether you're a fan of a Marbella pool party, or prefer wandering the beaches of Thailand, bucket of cocktail in hand, the high street always has us covered when it comes to sourcing some statement swimwear.

Pink recycled material swimsuit €25.95

The Spring / Summer collections bring with them a renewed appreciation for bright colours and pretty patterns, and warmer weather simply begs to be complimented with a cheerful wardrobe palette.

While black is a slimming staple, there is no time like a holiday to splash some colour and print on your fashion choices.

We have selected 12 of our favourite, stand out swimsuits you can nab online ahead of your holiday.

Some may scoff at the concept of accessorising your swimsuit, but there is a lot to be said for teaming key pieces with swimwear to create an outfit that can go from poolside to party simply with the addition of a pair of denim shorts or a maxi skirt.

Monkli zip front swimsuit €30.00

Add a straw beach bag and a shell anklet for a casual look, or don some strappy sandals and a neon bumbag for pool party perfection to amplify any of these beach babe lewks.

Celebrities favour delicate body jewellery with their swimwear, but being celebrities and by association, affluent, it is safe to assume that their precious metal jewellery isn't going to go green after being submerged in chlorine a single time.

If you plan to opt for a delicate gold body harness or waist chain, it's a good idea to paint the jewellery with clear nail varnish to prevent the tell-tale sickly green hue of a tarnished affordable metal.

Lilac plunge swimsuit €35.00

With shell jewellery becoming a major micro-trend this year, it was inevitable that we would see the return of the shell choker and anklet. Embrace your inner ocean goddess by teaming shell jewellery with a sports-influenced swimsuit to create a surf inspired aesthetic.

Sunglasses are a subtle way to add some style. Cat eye shapes are flattering on most faces, and sunglasses chains are making a comeback in a big way if you're feeling brave.

Whether you opt for a pop of colour or a punchy print, there is nothing more invigorating than injecting some tropical hues into a holiday wardrobe.

ASOS Paisley swimsuit €44.24

Monki square cut swimsuit €25.00

Weekday geometric print swimsuit €34.56

 Zara two tone swimsuit €9.99

Neon yellow swimsuit €20.72

 Printed swimsuit €29.95

Neon pink swimsuit €28.00

& Other Stories low cut swimsuit €62.21

Weekday ribbed swimsuit €34.56

26-year-old Viktoria Popova wasn’t expecting the media storm that came her way when she posed for a pin-up style photo shoot.

The Russian teacher initially found herself under fire when the modelling agency she signed with posted the swimsuit pictures on Instagram.

Viktoria was then fired by her employer, Omsk school number 7, over the images.

Omsk city hall told the Siberian Times that the photos brought ‘irreversible damage to the reputation of the teacher’.

“By spreading frivolous images on the Internet in order to promote a commercial project she also hurt the image of the school,” they further stated, saying that her behaviour broke a code of conduct at the school.

However, other Russian educators rallied around the 26-year-old, posting their own swimsuit photos and decrying the double standards put upon them.

Many of these photos are accompanied by the hashtag ‘teachers are people too’, the Independent reports.

One Insta user implored, “When will the insanity stop in our country?”

Viktoria herself has spoken out on the matter, telling the Siberian Times, “I do not understand why I am getting the blame. I wasn’t posing in underwear or stockings.

“I said to them: ‘Don’t you know about American 1950s pin-up style? I’m sorry but this was not promoting some men’s saloon.

“People do take pictures nowadays. They pose on holidays and post pictures online. This was just an advert for a shop.”

Omsk Region government has now decided the teacher may return to her previous position if she likes, the BBC reports.

They stated, “The question of Viktoria’s future employment has been decided: she may decide to work as a teacher either at this school or another one.”

However, there’s a possibility that the 26-year-old could have landed herself a gig as a full-time model.  Suggestions that she has also been approach by Russian Dating Website have yet to be confirmed. Russian modelling agency Plus Size Omsk has also reached out to Viktoria.

Before we head away on holidays it's safe to say that many of us dream about sitting by the pool, cocktail in hand, wearing the trendiest swimsuit we could get our hands on.

But your dream is going to come to a screeching holt when you see this one piece.

Why on Earth was it made? We don't know… actually, we do. The designers wanted to "make" people "say WTF."

A post shared by Beloved Shirts (@belovedshirts) on

And WTF, indeed.

The one-piece was created by Beloved Shirts and is officially called the 'Sexy Chest One Piece Swimsuit'.

It has a very realistic print of a man's chest and back and comes in three colours; natural, tan and dark.

And of course, social media has lost the plot with it:

Yep, we don't think we'll be wearing this anytime soon.

Today’s women are probably most familiar with the itty bitty bikini type of swimwear which can now be spotted on any beach around the world.  But can you imagine what people wore for a dip back in 1916?

Well, a new video demonstrates every decade of swimming style from 1916 right up until today but rather than using a wardrobe of vintage suits to showcase the changes, the innovative people at Mode decided to use body paint instead.

According to Elle, each swimsuit took between 60 and 90 minutes to apply but thankfully those ten plus hours of labour have been handily reduced into a great little three minute clip.

No one really likes trying on intimate items in a shop – God knows who’s been trying it on before you – but we take some comfort in the little protective strip that is meant to protect us from germs.

Not anymore.

Philip Tierno, a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University’s School of Medicine has conducted research on the matter, and he found out that swimsuits, underwear and other intimate items were covered in skin, fecal and respiratory tract bacteria, and worst of all? Vaginal organisms like yeast.

He also found that the classiness of the shop doesn’t matter, it’s the skimpiness of the knickers that really makes the difference. Apparently, the skimpier the underwear, the more likely women are to take off their own knickers to try it on.

However, Tierno says: “The good thing is that most people have a very robust immune system, so they can usually fight off the small number of organisms they may get on their body. The fact that you come into contact with one doesn’t mean you’re going to get sick.”

If you want to make sure you DEFINITELY don’t get sick from going on the hunt for the perfect bikini, Tierno says there are some things you can do:

  • Keep your knickers on! And wash it when you get home.
  • Wash your swim suit or underwear after you’ve bought it – even if the protective strip is still on it.
  • Wash your hands after trying on the intimates.

Wow, Jessica is looking hot in these new promo pictures for her clothing line, featuring a sexy white swimsuit with a retro feel that we really, really want.

Following the birth of her daughter Maxwell in 2012, Jessica signed an endorsement to work with Weight Watchers in a bid to lose the 70 pounds she had put on during the pregnancy.

Shortly after Jessica fell pregnant again and gave birth to son Ace last June. However she is now back as a spokesperson for Weight Watchers and if these pictures are anything to go by she must be doing them proud!
