We all know knowledge is power, but there’s one thing about retaining information, and another about putting this information into practice, right?

For as long as most of us can remember we’ve been warned about the dangers of sun exposure, and yet a worrying number of Irish women still leave themselves vulnerable to skin damage by neglecting to apply sun protection.

Interestingly, 77% of Irish women agree their face is the biggest area of concern for premature ageing, and yet just one quarter of Irish women only use sun protection while abroad.

Considering that 80% of a person’s annual UV exposure happens in day to day life not on holiday, the findings established in The City Sun Report, which was conducted by Garnier Ambre Solaire, are a huge cause for concern.

So, why are we failing to get proactive on this front?

Well, 27 per cent of women admitted annoyance with the sticky feeling while 12 per cent said the fear of it ruining their make-up resulted in non-application.

Determined to counteract this issue, Garnie Amber Solaire have created a product which is designed to provide UVA and UVB protection with a lightweight skin feel, and can easily be applied either under or over makeup whilst on-the-go.

The Sensitive Advanced Protecting and Hydrating Face Mist has been given the thumbs up by Harley Street’s Dr Justine Kluk.

“With so many women in Ireland fighting premature ageing, one of the simplest ways to make a positive change to your skin is to apply a face mist with SPF50, UVB protection and UVA protection in the morning and regularly throughout the day as part of your daily beauty routine.”

If you’re serious about protecting your face against the sun (whether abroad or not), you can pick this product up in pharmacies, grocery stores and Penney’s stores nationwide for just €15.00

It's fair to say that the Irish are a little lazy when it comes to sun safety and sun screen – and there's a lot research to prove it.

A new study carried out by La Roche-Posay and the Irish Cancer Society has found that 44% of adults only wear sunscreen in Ireland during the summer months with 37% only wearing it when the weather hits over 20 degrees.

And, 12% admit to not wearing sunscreen at all in Ireland due to a belief that they don’t need it because of our weather. Eeek.

We think that a massive reason why we're so relaxed about sun safety is that we are never really sure about how much sun we were exposing ourselves to – until now, this is.

In probably one of the most exciting developments in sun safety, sun experts La Roche-Posay has designed a world-first (Irish-designed) wearable UV monitor which tells the wearer exactly how much sun they’re exposed to, enabling them to protect themselves accordingly.

Called My UV Patch, the monitor is a transparent patch which adheres to the body. The patch contains photosensitive dyes that work with all skin tones, changing colour when exposed to UV rays to indicate varying levels of sun exposure.

The wearer simply takes a photo of the patch and uploads it to the La Roche-Posay My UV Patch mobile app, which will be available on both iOS and Android.

Oh, and did we mention this essential piece of summer kit is FREE? The patch is due to be available in Ireland from July onwards and will be distributed with advice, free of charge, from top dermatologists and GPs.

“Non-melanoma skin cancer is still the most common cancer in Ireland and we have the highest reported rates of it in Europe,” says Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager with the Irish Cancer Society.

“When caught in time it’s highly treatable. This means that educating consumers on sun behaviour and UV exposure is extremely important.

“We hope that the My UV Patch skin sensor will deliver a step change in people’s awareness of UV exposure and sun protection.  It is fantastic to see smart technology being used in this way to help with such an important public health issue.”

As the weather gets hot, hot, hot, it is important that you stay adequately protected from the sun. Unfortunately, while sunscreen is a vital beauty essential, it can leave your skin greasy which is not good if you are prone to spots or have sensitive skin.

If this is something that you can relate to, these suncreams will become your new BFFs:

Clinique Face Cream SPF
This sun protection has an SPF of 50, won’t leave your pores clogged and absorbs pretty quickly – no more waiting for it to soak in.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturiser
This oil-free moisturiser helps to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays and also helps to even skin tone and bring out your skin’s natural radiance.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid
Perfect if you are heading to the beach. It is also great for using every day as it sits under your foundation without causing it to slide off your face.

SkinCeuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 30
If you are prone to getting little spots and pimples every time you apply sunscreen, then this is the product for you. Perfect for sensitive skins – it won’t block your pores and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

We all know the risks associated with the sun, especially premature ageing and skin cancer. However, are you clued up when it comes to knowing which sunscreen is for you?

Who should wear it?
Sun cream is not just for pale ladies and everyone should wear it, regardless of whether you tan or not.

How long does it last?
It won’t last longer than two hours and less so if you are swimming. Sun cream is only water resistant and must be reapplied after bathing.

What type of suncream for me?
It is important you wear a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

How much should I put on?
You need to put at least an ounce of sunscreen on so that it is a layer over your skin.

When to apply?
Make sure you apply it at least 15 minutes before you step out into the sun.

What SPF?
Go for an SPF of at least 30, even if you tan and especially if you are planning on staying in the sun for a while.

With skin cancer now being the most common cancer in Ireland, La Roche-Posay looked to the US to understand what that means to society.

Shockingly, a study by the American Academy of Dermatology has revealed that using sun protection to prevent skin cancers comes second to people wanting to prevent against premature aging.

According to the research, teenagers felt more compelled to apply sunscreen if they saw a video showing that it could protect their skin from premature aging, than if they saw that it could protect against cancer.

When it comes to protecting yourself against skin cancer, it is important to apply a good suncream that will block both UVA and UVB rays. La Roche-Posay has a dedicated Anthelios sun care range that offers dermatological protection for sensitive and sun allergic skin what has the highest PPD and SPF across their range and a variety of textures to suit all skin types.

Not only does the Anthelios range offer a uniform filter distribution for optimal protection and excellent filter stability for lasting protection, it is also ultra water resistant, even after 4 swims, and is enriched with Thermal Spring Water, to soothe and provide anti-oxidant properties.

Nearly all types of skin cancers are curable if detected early so it is important to be vigilant about monitoring moles, looking for new lumps and growth or changes in existing moles.

Increasing awareness and changing behaviours will save lives.

Did you know that nearly all of visible aging is caused by both pollution and the sun? Well, according to the UK Skin Cancer Foundation it is. This means that sunscreen is just not enough when it comes to protecting your skin.

Thankfully, there are products that help to prevent both of these damaging your skin.

SkinCeuticals, works below the skin’s surface to neutralize oxidative damage and replenish natural antioxidants.  They also prevent damage by enhancing the skin’s natural reparative capacity to correct and reduce visible signs of aging.

When used together, a SkinCeuticals antioxidant serum and broad-spectrum sunscreen provide protection against environmental damage and premature ageing.

Products to use include the CE Ferulic, the Phloretin CF and the Phloretin CF .

The CE Ferulic increases firmness and replenishes lipids to reduce wrinkles and is ideal for dry, normal and sensitive skin, while the Phloretin CF diminishes discolouration and accelerates cellular renewal to retexture skin. It is ideal for oily, problematic and normal skin.

On the other hand, the Phloretin CF Gel is ideal for normal, combination skin and those who cannot tolerate a serum.

Their sunscreens work on the skin’s surface to block UVA and UVB rays, by reflecting and absorbing UV rays. The Mineral Radiance UV Defense SPF50 provides universal tint for all skin tones and is an adaptable fluid to boost radiance. The Brightening UV Defense SPF30 can be used as moisturising sunscreen and is ideal for all skin types experiencing uneven skin tone.

As the summer approaches, it’s time to stock up on suncream; unfortunately, finding a cream that is suitable for your face and won’t make you breakout can be difficult.

However, to help in your battle for the perfect suncream, La Roche-Posay has launched their Anthelios range which has products for all skin types and is suitable for sun sensitive skin.

The range includes Anthelios XL Ultra-light fluid with a factor 50+ and Anthelios XL Compact-cream factor 50+. The Ultra-light fluid offers protection against high UVB and UVA rays which can cause skin damage, a grey skin tone and wrinkles. It has a non-oily, glide-on texture that is invisible on the skin and is small enough to pop in your bag and carry it around with you.

The Compact-cream also offers high UVA and UVB protection but it smoothes skin texture and creates an even complexion. It is designed for the most sensitive of skin and melts in, leaving no residue on the face.

The range is suitable for normal to dry skin, combination and oily skin so you are bound to find one right for your skin type.
