While most people don't have distinct face shapes (you could have a mix of a square and round or oval and diamond-shaped face), some people do have one that you can clearly recognise.

"Your face shape tends to reveal your basic personality and your overall approach to life," says Jean Haner, an expert in face reading and the author of The Wisdom of Your Face.

Jean spoke to Cosmopolitan and explained the most common face shapes and what they say about you, based on her studies in 3,000-year-old reading techniques derived from Chinese medicine.

Interested? Then, read on.

Rectangular Face Shape

This shape of face is squared off at the forehead and chin. People with this type of face are really good thinkers and value logic; but they often over-think.

They are usually the planner in a group of friends but don't talk much about their feelings. However, they do like to stay in shape as they have to work off whatever is going on inside their heads.

Rounded Face Shape

A round face usually has a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. This type of face usually means you're a people person who is very kind and giving, and you always put others first.

But sometimes, you put other people first too much and then you tend to not get what you need in the relationship.

Diamond Face Shape

This type of face is pointed toward the forehead and chin, and wide around the middle. This shape typically means that you like to take control and want things done a specific way. You are also very detail-orientated and produce a great quality of work.

You can communicate well with others but can also be harsh and sharp in your words too.

Oval Face Shape

An oval face is more longer than wide and the jaw is smaller than the cheekbones. This shape means you always know the right thing to say and you make other people feel comfortable and welcome.

That said, sometimes you can be too focused on saying the right thing and worry about what others think of you too much.

Pear or Triangle Face Shape

This face shape is narrower at the forehead and wide around the jawline. It usually means that you take charge in most situations, and the smaller your forehead is at the top, the more control you want to have. But, because you are always so driven, you end up successful.

Knowing your face shape is as important as knowing your body type. If you don’t know the shape of your face, you won’t know the type of hairstyle that will accentuate your features.

The easiest way to determine your face shape is to pull your hair back, take a hard look in the mirror and examine the widest part of your face.

Oval

  • Your forehead is a tiny bit wider than your chin.
  • The length of your face is about one and a half times its width.

Round

  • The length and width of your face are more or less the same.
  • You have prominent cheeks.

Square

  • You have a square shaped jaw and chin.
  • Your jaw line is nearly the same width as your forehead.

Oblong

  • Longer than an oval face shape and not as wide.
  • You may have a pointy chin.

Heart

  • You have a narrow jaw and pointy chin
  • Both your cheekbones and forehead are wide.

Diamond

  • Your cheekbones are the widest part of your face.
  • You have a narrow jaw line and forehead.
