We're all guilty of stumbling in to the house after one G&T too many and falling straight into bed with a full face of make-up. But if you're neglecting your skin every night by not taking your make-up off completely, the damage could be worse than you think.

We know it's simple to skip nightly cleansing and moisturising sometimes and let your morning shower do all the work, but it's definitely shouldn't be happening every day.

Here are just some of the icky stuff that your poor face goes through when you sleep in your make-up…

1. Skin damage
By leaving foundation or even tinted moisturiser on overnight, your skin has to focus on breaking down the heavy particles left behind. This means your facial skin cells are unable to repair and renew themselves properly. Ever notice how dull your skin looks when you wake up with your make-up still on? That's why. Over time, neglecting your skin can lead to increased dryness, clogged pores, blackheads and wrinkles.

2. Severely dry lips
Lipstick and lip stain aren't designed to just fade away by themselves – they need some extra help, either with cleanser or a dab of Vaseline. Leaving your lippie on overnight can result in overly dry and chapped lips – and you've more chance of getting wrinkles around your mouth later in life, too.

3. Eye infections
One word: ew. If mascara isn't removed it can clog your eyelash follicles leading to infection or even styes. Eye shadow residue can also rub off on your pillow and get trapped in your eye, causing inflammation or conjunctivitis. And, if all that wasn't enough, leaving your mascara on overnight can make eyelashes brittle and more likely to break.
