When Jack Dawson slipped beneath the icy waters of the Atlantic in Titanic, more than a few of us questioned whether his death could have been avoided.

And general consensus suggests that if Rose DeWitt Bukater had moved over a few damn inches on her board, the pair of them may have led a long and happy life together.

Unfortunately, James Cameron, the director of the box-office smash isn't with us on that one. But if you think Mr Cameron's opinion on Jack's fate is based on the logistics of the scene, you'd be wrong.

Jack died because, well, that's what the script demanded – simple as.

Speaking to the Daily Beast recently, the renowned director addressed the query into Jack's demise, and it sounds like he's officially done with that particular line of questioning.

"We're gonna go there? Look, it's very, very simple: you read page 147 of the script and it says, 'Jack gets off the board and gives his place to her so that she can survive,' It's that simple," he insisted.

And while James stands by the scene's direction, he does provide fans with an alternate ending.

"His best choice was to keep his upper body out of the water and hope to get pulled out by a boat or something before he died," James reasoned.

But he didn't, and he died.

And it's time to move on with our lives, ladies.

Well, our minds are officially blown.

Anyone who's ever wept over Rose and Jack's bittersweet romance in Titanic has wished their story could have ended differently. Turns out the film has had an alternate ending all along – though sadly Jack still ends up in the deep blue sea.

Titanic director James Cameron originally filmed two finales for the last moments of the film, where old Rose drops the diamond necklace into the ocean.

In the ending that could have been, Bill Paxton and Rose's granddaughter try to stop her from flinging the necklace into the sea. Cue lots of cursing, running and bad editing. Poor Rose!

It's… interesting. And by "interesting", we mean "awful". But we'll be honest, we still got a kick out of watching it!
