Salt spray is the texturiser of choice for most straight or wavy-haired ladies, but it turns out there could be something even more effective out there.

Actress and model Suki Waterhouse raised a few eyebrows earlier this year when she said she had moved on from washing her hair in beer, and had started using Coca-Cola instead.

"I don't like my hair when it's washed – it's fine and limp – but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something," she told Us Weekly.

Much as we liked the sound of Amazon-esque hair for the price of a bottle of soft drink, we were a bit apprehensive to try out the suggestion ourselves. All that syrupy sugar… it could have been a recipe for disaster.

Luckily, one US beauty blogger has taken the risk for us.

YouTuber Ellie, known online as Ellko, tried out the Coke Hair Rinse as part of her 'Fail or Holy Grail' series, and she gave it a big thumbs up.

How does it work? You saturate your hair in Coca-Cola over a bath or bowl, then rinse it out with water before air-drying or blow-drying.

According to Ellie, this trick works best if your hair is naturally fine, but even with her relatively thick hair she still saw a good result.

"My hair has some waves that it didn't have before," she says. "I like textured, wild bed-head looks, so I think this is pretty cool… and it's cheap."
