There is nothing worse then when you are enjoying a delicious ice-cream or cold drink when you are suddenly hit with the dreaded brain freeze. Ouch. There is even a medical term for this – sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgi. It's certainly a bit of a mouthful.

Thankfully, you can do something to stop it happening and that is to use a spoon. However, it is not just about digging your spoon into your ice cream, according to research, it’s about how you position the spoon in your mouth.

Simply jabbing it in won’t help and you need to angle it so it doesn’t hit the roof of your mouth. The same goes for cold drinks, so ditch the straw and simply sip from the cup.

The reasoning is that when the cold hits the top of your mouth it causes a sudden change in temperature which in turns send signals to your brain which produces the brain freeze.

It looks like we'' have to say goodbye to our favourite 99.
