Everyday life can be a bit like a balancing act. Many of us strive for harmony through well-being rituals that revive and rebalance our mind, body and soul.

From the moment we wake and throughout the day, that quest for harmony impacts on all aspects of our lives, even in our skincare. Whether cleansing or moisturising, what we do to and for our skin on a daily basis impacts directly its overall health and its own feeling of balance.

The team at AVEENO® believes that healthy-feeling skin starts in the shower. Our morning cleansing ritual is just as important as how we moisturise and protect our skin afterwards. Harsh formulas, over-washing or detox cleansing can all tip the delicate balance of our skin’s health and leave it feeling dry, uncomfortable or dehydrated.

The AVEENO® Body Wash Collection is designed to gently cleanse the body all over and protect against dryness. Formulated with finely milled, colloidal oatmeal, the range leaves skin feeling clean, comfortable and moisturised.  There are four variants to choose from:

NEW AVEENO® Skin Relief Moisturising Body Wash is clinically proven to gently cleanse leaving skin feeling smooth, clean and fresh whilst helping to reduce skin dryness. When used as part of a regime with AVEENO® Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion, AVEENO® Skin Relief Body Wash with prebiotic triple oat complex helps to improve the balance of the skin’s natural microbiome.

It leaves skin resilient and healthy looking from day one. Fragrance free and soap free, it is suitable for very dry skin.

AVEENO® Daily Moisturising Body Wash is clinically proven to gently cleanse, leaving your skin with a clean, fresh feeling without dryness. Its unique formula with colloidal oatmeal helps maintain the balance of the skin's natural microbiome and helps preserve the skin's natural moisture barrier for healthy looking skin. Fragrance and soap free, it is suitable for normal to dry or sensitive skin.

AVEENO® Daily Moisturising Yogurt Body Wash, available in Apricot & Honey Scent or Vanilla and Oat Scent, is formulated with colloidal oatmeal and Greek yogurt. Winter can be an absolute pain when it comes to your precious lips. We need them for so many things, especially kissing for Valentine's Day, but the bitterly baltic weather does it's best to dry them out.

We were intrigued by the science behind it, so asked Marie Therese, Head of Training with Graham Anthony Distribution, for the 411 on why our lips lose their coveted moisture.

She explained that our lips can become very dry because our lips do not have working sebaceous glands, which would serve the purpose of keeping our lips moist. Harsh conditions and ageing are also key factors.

When it comes to skincare and having a beauty regime, it can quickly become confusing and even a bit overwhelming. From figuring out your skin type, to finishing your daily routine with the right women’s perfume for the occasion, suddenly your beauty regime sounds more like hard work.

It doesn’t have to be so mind-boggling! One of the first things to remember is that no matter your skin type, or how busy you may be, having any sort of regular routine can help to maintain healthy, glowing skin.

So, if you’re hoping to create a new beauty regime, overhaul your current routine or simply just learn a bit more about skincare, here are some top tips to help you get started.

Understand your skin type

Understanding your skin is so important before you buy any new products, as it can make sure you’re providing your skin with the treatment it needs. Most of us identify our skin type when we’re in our late teens, and often stick to that diagnosis into our 20s and beyond.

It’s worth keeping in mind that your skin will change significantly as you get older, so take some time to identify any new concerns or changing skin conditions. Either do your homework, or consider seeing a professional at a skincare counter to help you.

Keep it simple

It can be easy to get carried away once you start discovering a new routine. However, it’s important to keep it simple; this means you’ve got more chance of keeping it up every day! No one wants to spend half an hour in front of the mirror every morning or night, so stick to minimum products and it will quickly become part of your everyday routine.

One of the best tips for good skin maintenance is using a quality cleanser. Look out for the type of cleanser that will work best for your skin; they often come in various textures like a milk, cream, balm or facial wash.

You should follow your cleanser with a toner. Toners are designed to remove any leftover impurities which your cleanser may not have picked up. There are toners for specific skin types, created with a variety of ingredients, so don’t just choose any old type!

One of the final steps should be to moisturise; even if you have oily skin. Hydrating your skin through a moisturiser can ensure your skin remains healthy. You may want to consider a serum or eye cream to finish with.

It is worth noting that moisturiser is designed to sit on the surface of your skin and protect it from external elements. Serum, on the other hand, sinks right into your skin for extra treatment.

Protecting your skin

You don’t have to be on holiday or in direct sunlight to wear SPF. Our skin is almost always exposed to some sort of UV, even if it’s cloudy outside. By wearing some kind of sunscreen, even if it’s in your makeup, you’re protecting your skin from a multitude of things, such as skin discolouration and appearance of red veins or blotchiness.

Wearing SPF will also slow down wrinkles and stop your skin from prematurely ageing.

Your makeup and fragrance routine

Once you’ve achieved glowing, healthy skin, it’s important to incorporate the rest of your beauty regime. When it comes to applying makeup, consider investing in a primer that is designed for your particular skin condition. Makeup primers are designed to reduce redness, diminish pores or create a matte or dewy finish.

Also, as mentioned earlier, look for foundation that has SPF in it; a layer of foundation alone is simply not enough to protect your skin.

Wearing fragrance is the perfect finish to your beauty regime; but did you know there’s a skill to wearing it properly? Tips from beauty experts have revealed that you should never rub your wrists together after spraying perfume, as this creates friction and heat which can change the scent.

It’s also interesting to note that perfume doesn’t last long on dry skin; even more reason to look after your skin with the right products!

Whatever you do, don’t cover up your perfume with your clothes; target areas like your neck, wrist or inner elbow if you’re wearing short sleeves.

So, now you have a better idea of skincare, makeup and even fragrance, hopefully you can start to put together the perfect beauty regime that works for you.

Those of us who go head-to-head with our oily skin daily will relate to the eternal struggle of wanting to have hydrated skin, but trying not to look like a high-shine mirror throwing out spotlight reflections from our faces. IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK, PEOPLE?

It’s fine. I’m fine. The shine show must go on.

Now that it’s Winter, the game is changing. We’ve put together a Beauty Bible of sorts on the Great Oily Skin Battle of 2018. It’s a thing.

Our skin of course is more than just dry, oily, acne-prone etc. We are nuanced beings, and this is no different when it comes to our skin.

The question is, why do some of us suffer more from oily skin in the winter, and others suffer with dryness?

It seems unfair, between having to glue ourselves to our hot water bottles and getting up when it’s still dark, why should our skin be causing us problems on top of that?

Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group claims that: “Skin can become more oily as a mechanism to compensate for excess dryness. The skin will overcompensate in sebum or oil production to moisturise itself.”

Rude much? Never fear, we're here to save the shiny day. Here are our top tips for combating oily skin during winter, thank us later…

1. Prioritise and Moisturise

You might think that moisturising skin which is already oily is a mistake, how ever oily skin compensates for excess dryness, so keeping it hydrated is KEY.

The right moisturiser for you is like getting a bra fitting, it can be a hassle but so worth the results if you’re patient enough. Each and every one of us has unique skin cells, so it can be next to impossible to find the skin regime for us.

There are dozens and dozens of moisturisers on the market, but our personal recommendation is to use one with Vitamin E.

2. Watch your Tone

Yon-Ka ESSENTIALS have the BEST lotion on the market – it’s an alcohol free invigorating mist for normal to oily skin and contains five essential oils. Their ESSENTIALS range start your beauty regime the right way- with cleansing.

They work to gently purity and optimise the effectiveness of your everyday care regimen, and leaves your skin soft and hydrated.

Use after cleansing and spray onto the face as a mist in the  morning and at night for best results.

3. Avoid using petroleum jelly
According to make-up artist Katey Denno, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can create the illusion of granting us moisturised skin, but actually the substance suffocates your pores.

It’s water-repellant and not water-soluble, so it actually just seals the barrier so that moisture cannot leave the skin.

Basically you're actually drying out your pores by keeping out the air and moisture, while it's thick texture makes it tricky to cleanse the skin. It's literally a lose-lose, gals.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Hot showers in the winter are widely recognised as stripping your skin of it’s essential oils, thereby preventing it from achieving moisture.

By using tea tree oil with warm water, this makes up for the loss of moisture and brings your skin back to its supple self in no time.

5. It’s all about keeping the pores happy

Changes in the weather make our pores hella cranky.

Environmental causes are some of the major factors in skin issues, meaning that our pores have a bit of a ‘mare in the winter especially. Our skin has its own survival techniques which can be the bane of our facial lives, but really it’s just trying to do it’s job.

6. Don’t let it dry out

Farber also claims that “If your skin is dry, it’ll often feel tight and have a white-ish flaking more diffused all over the face. Oily skin will often concentrate around sebaceous areas, like the T-zone, and pores in this areas may be visibly larger.”

Dry skin translates to an overproduction of sebum and oils, most likely because of the extreme temperate changes from freezing cold outdoors to overheated indoors.

7. Keeping your skin cleansed is a MUST- no matter what type you are.

Yon-Ka ESSENTIAL Masque 103 is a purifying, clarifying mask which may actually save your skin, become the love of your life and have your kids all at once. A bold claim for a bold product.

This detoxifying mask contains three types of clay which purify the skin, tighten pores, brighten the complexion and leave it with an exceptional glow.

Glow up, shine down. It's ideal.

8. Stay THURSTY

Drink as much water as you are physically capable of every day, and your pores will thank you for it- guaranteed. Everyone needs different amounts, the two litres per day ‘fact’ is most likely a myth but if your body is dehydrated then so is your skin, that math adds up.

9. Use a clean towel whenever you are washing that lovely face of yours!

You don’t want any bacteria present in the towel to be transferred right back onto your face. Pat your skin dry instead of roughly trying to rub the make-up or skin cells off.

Clean towels prevent oily skin and breakouts, so they’re essentially your undercover guardian angel. Wash them at LEAST once a week, folks.

There you have it, nine core tips for surviving the winter with oily skin.

Remember that each person is totally unique, and research and discover what products feel right for you. Treat your skin with the care and calm it deserves, you’ll be radiant and glowing in no time without the unwanted shine.

With winter quickly approaching, most families dread the onset of seasonal ills. From contracting the common cold to coming down with a serious case of the flu, there is nothing as frustrating as a blocked nose and a sore, scratchy throat when you’re trying to sleep during a long cold night.

Why does the air become so dry in the winter? When the cold winter weather sets in, we tend to crank up our heating system which causes overly dry indoor air. While your heater increases the temperature in your home, there is no moisture added to the air. As a result, the relative humidity drops considerably.

If you haven’t thought about the benefits of using a humidifier, here are five reasons why you should consider humidifying your household when the cold winter weather sets in.

1. Reduction in the Spread of Viruses

Unlike those old wives’ tales, there is research behind why you should keep your air moist. There was a time when doctors would suggest leaving windows open for those suffering from colds and flu. Although they didn’t have the science yet to prove it, we now know that influenza viruses hate moist air and are less likely to spread throughout the household if you use a humidifier. No, you don’t need to open a window to let the snow in, get a humidifier!

2. Relief from Sinusitis

While you may not come down with a cold or flu—sore, dry noses are prevalent in winter months. Most households are heated with dry heat and, as a result, many people suffer from what is called sinusitis. It’s simply an inflammation of the sinuses, but you can find a great deal of relief from a humidifier.

3. Hydrates Dry Skin

The same dry heat that causes an inflammation of the sinuses can create havoc on your skin. If you find that you suffer from dry skin, humidifying your household can bring you relief. Some people have reported that they can even cut back on the amount of moisturizer they apply during the winter because the moist air in their homes helps to protect their skin.

4. A Better Night’s Rest

As silly as this might sound, humidifiers can offer the benefit of improved sleep, especially if your partner is known for those loud snores that keep you from drifting off. Considering that humidifiers keep the air moist and moisture keeps the nasal passages clear, a humidifier just might offer the relief you are looking for.

5. Promotes Faster Healing

A humidifier can help reduce the symptoms of a common cold, influenza or even allergies.A humidifier keeps your nasal passages clear which helps speed up the healing process if you’re feeling under the weather. For people with bad allergies, there are even humidifiers which can help purify the air.

When all is said and done, keeping the home humidified in the winter months can truly be beneficial to your health. However, if you don't want to spend the money on a humidifier and would like to use natural solutions to combat dry air this winter, try these alternative ways to increase humidity at home.

Keep in mind, if you’re struggling to fight the dry air in your home, it is vital not to overuse your heating system, especially when a simple jumper may suffice. It will obviously take intervention on your part, but these are five very important reasons to use a humidifier during those long, cold winter months.

We’ve sorted out the essential make-up products that get you as close to possible to perfect skin. In the age of selfies and Instagram filters, the pressure to have clear satin skin without visible pores is more difficult to alleviate than ever. In our digital world, ‘perfection’ be instantly captured by every camera lens, but how can we feel confident in our skin all day? We barely have time to get dressed in the morning, let alone put a full face of make-up on. Some of us try to use the ‘I’ll just do it in the car at red lights’ trick too, don’t deny it!

Clarins have created two new products to give us a solution, with the launch of Skin Illusion SPF 15 and Pore Control Pore Minimizing Serum. Both are making waves in the skincare industry, and we can see why. By reducing our pores and then smoothing them over with a natural looking foundation, our complexion is back in our control. Yes, even with stress spots and bags under our eyes from a night out!

To meet the need expressed by women of all ages, skin types and ethnicities, Clarins offers new skincare treatments which are specifically designed to target and help reduce the frustrating presence of blemishes and give your face a healthy appearance. A barely there, flawless radiance is hard to achieve, but we think Clarins have cracked the code. We owe them a lot for this major favour, this can cut our make-up routine in half at least.

Skin Illusion SPF 15:
A foundation veil with a serum texture and unique bare skin finish, the Skin Illusion SPF 15 is your ticket to uneven skin texture. Tell your skin that nude is in, and feel naturally smooth all throughout the day. It contains the ideal amount of pigments in a blend of silky, non-greasy oils. The foundation allows the skin to breathe and gives the illusion of barely there natural beauty. We are hugely impressed with the difference this foundation makes to your daily make-up routine.

Skin Illusion is next level translucent boosting. It’s also available in 22 shades to suit all skin tones. Skin Illusion is designed in collaboration with Clarins make-up artists worldwide and come in neutral, gold-beige and pinky-beige tones to deliver a personal, invisible correcting effect from the fairest skin to the darkest. Inclusivity is key in the beauty world, we all deserve foundation that matches our skin colour.

Pore Control pore minimizing serum:
Smooths skin texture to give you a radiant glow. The expert serum is enriched with two major physiological and plant advances to reduce the appearance of pores and illuminate the face, promoting beautiful looking skin. Clarins Laboratories observed that skin surrounding the pore showed a lower expression of collagen and elastin, leading to loss of density and elasticity and contributed in making pores more visible.

Clarins then decided to use plant innovation obtained by a green biotechnology to reduce the look of pores. Extracts of vine flower cells and organic strawberry tree fruit help in making pores appear less visible. By utilising tamarind pulp acids to help remove dead cells that can clog pores, the skin surface is smoothed and skin texture is refined. This is your newest best friend, we promise!

Thank God(dess) for Clarins and their skincare range. Both products are now available at all Clarins counters nationwide! Hurry, before they sell out.

Skin Illusion SPF 15: €35

New season, new make-up trends, new wardrobe… and a new set of hard conditions for our skin.

Let's be honest, Irish winters can be harsh – and we're not talking about the cold, rain and wind – but they dry and dull skin that can result from it.

Sporting a dry, chapped face is never a good look, but with these few simple tips, your face will be glowing all winter long:

You're using your regular moisturiser

It's time to bring in the heavyweights. A winter beauty kit isn't complete without an industrial strength moisturiser.

You will need a good day-time moisturiser and an even richer one for night-time. Heavy moisturiser is useful because it restores the hydration that is lost on the outer layer of skin.

Leaving out SPF

Just because the sun doesn't shine through the clouds during winter months doesn't mean the UV rays aren't as intense – yep, they still knock around during the winter. Make sure you still use a SPF.

Sunscreen prevents not only sun burn but wrinkles, age spots, and of course, skin cancer. Look out for a moisturiser with a built in SPF to make your beauty routine even handier.

Over-exfoliating

Exfoliating is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells, but over-doing it in winter does more harm than good.

Just tone down on the peels and scrubs during these months as you're in risk of stripping away your natural oils. Instead, use a hot face cloth or cleanser to remove dead skin cells.

Not drinking enough water

You knew this was coming! But it's so essential for your skin and your body to stock up on some H2O during the cold months.

Drinking at least eight glasses of water will rehydrate your skin and stop any puffiness you might experience once the chilly weather strikes. Also be aware that coffee and alcohol can dry out your skin too.

Staying in a hot shower

We know it's tempting to stay in a hot shower when it's freezing outside, but after about 15 minutes the heat begins to strip away your skin's lipid layer (a complex of fatty acids that holds in precious moisture).

Turn the temperature down as much as you can or shorten your shower time. Your water bill will thank you anyway.

If you've been leaving your summer clothes at the back of the wardrobe lately in favour of anything that'll cover up your skin, it could be time to overhaul your daily routine. Most dry skin conditions have easy fixes, that involve making simple changes how you look after your skin.

Of course, if you still see no change after a few weeks, it may be worth visiting a GP or dermatologist.

Here are a few no-hassle routes to getting smooth, hydrated skin again…

1. Don't overdo it in the shower
Keep your shower time to a maximum of five or ten minutes, as the harsh hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils. We know a steaming hot shower is a great way to wake up, but turn the dial down when you can . The cooler the water, the better it is for your skin.

2. Choose your products wisely
Go for gentle, fragrance-free shower products and moisturiser. Skip any products containing alcohol, and instead look for ingredients like jojoba oil, cocoa butter, grapeseed oil and other hydrators.

3. Lock in moisture
Don't let steamy showers ruin your skin. Keep the bathroom door closed while showering, dry off gently by patting your skin dry, and apply moisturiser within a few minutes of drying off.

4. Could your detergent be the issue?
Strong washing powders and other laundry products can really irritate the skin, and while you mightn't break out in an all-over rash they can cause dryness and tightness. Look for hypoallergenic detergents and use a fabric softener too.

5. Protect your skin
UV rays and harsh winds can all wreak havoc on already dry skin, so give yourself a fighting chance each day. Invest in a foundation that contains SPF 15 at least, and apply a DD (Daily Defence) cream over your normal moisturiser to act as a barrier against the elements.

Dry skin can be extremely irritating and make us very self conscious. Many of us suffer from it and while we can buy moisturisers for dry skin, here are some home remedies you can try too. They are affordable and great for your skin's health.

Olive oil and egg yolk
Olive oil is a natural antioxidant and the vitamin A in egg yolk controls the shedding of the skin and also makes it smooth. Mix together and rub on dry areas.

Coconut oil
Coconut oil has enough fatty acids that make up for loss of moisture from the skin, it also makes your skin feel soft and smooth. Leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning, as regularly as you can.

Lemon juice and sugar
This exfoliating scrub evens out rough spots on the face, while the lemon lightens the skin tone. Mix a teaspoon of sugar with half a lemon and rub it all over your face.

Avocado and honey
This locks in moisture and can improve your skin's health. Mix half a cup of honey with half a mashed avocado into a mask consistency, apply on dry areas and leave on for 15 minutes before washing it off.

Banana and yoghurt
This mask moisturises and exfoliates the skin. Mash bananas with yoghurt and leave on dry areas for half an hour, then rinse it off.

Real life doesn’t always pertain to a perfectly regular skincare routine. As much as I love looking after my skin, real life does get in the way sometimes, and it’s not always possible to stick to what you should be doing.

Equally, I know that finances won’t always allow us to snap up a load of snazzy products in one go. It takes time (and a bit of trial and error) to invest in the right products.

Here are five that are sure to set you off on the right foot and instantly improve how your skin looks and feels.

1. OSKIA Renaissance Cleansing Gel
This is an absolute cult cleanser. The product comes out as a rich, vitamin-laden balm, and quickly emulsifies into a light, oily foam upon contact with water. The best thing about this cleanser is that it has something to offer every skin type; it rebalances oil, soothes any sensitivity and helps massively with hydration, too. Worth every penny.

2. Clarisonic Brush
There isn’t a skincare game-changer out there quite like the Clarisonic. With one use, skin will feel softer and far cleaner than ever before. This is a great investment because as products get used up and thrown out, you’ll still always be able to rely on this handy piece of kit. Oh, and Kourtney Kardashian’s a fan, if you care!

€149 from Brown Thomas and Space NK

3. REN Glycolactic Radiance Mask
Another one of those products that never fails to deliver. A thin layer of this citrus-scented gel mask works wonders at brightening and boosting the complexion – it’s a gentler and far more effective alternative to old-fashioned scrubs, and you’ll never look back.

€35 from Clerys, Debenhams and Space NK

4. Una Brennan Super Facialist Clay Mask
A cheaper treat for skin that’s brilliant for deep-cleaning oily or spot-prone skin. Plus, the price means you’re far more likely to keep up with regular use!

€11.99 from Boots

5. La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque
Every skin needs a good hydrating mask  and this La Roche Posay version will suit all types. Just a small amount worn overnight will leave you looking well-rested, with plumper, happier, healthier skin.

€17 from all good pharmacies and Boots
