Actress Cobie Smulders has opened up about a cancer diagnosis she faced in secret when she was just 25.

Cobie, best known for her role as Robin on How I Met Your Mother, has revealed she underwent numerous surgeries over a two-year period after being diagnosed with the potentially terminal disease.

"I had tumours on both ovaries, and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes and surrounding tissues," Cobie admits in the new issue of Women's Health, for which she posed topless as a cover star.

The diagnosis came as Cobie's acting career had just begun to take off, a year after HIMYM first premiered.

Thankfully, Cobie beat the disease and even became a mum for the first time at 27, when she welcomed her daughter Shaelyn, followed by a son in January of this year.

The actress and her husband Taran Killam kept the birth of their second child quiet, with Cobie casually revealing the news during a magazine interview a few weeks later. but not divulging her little one's name.

Despite overcoming her cancer, Cobie says she never feels completely safe from it. "I don't think I'll ever feel like I'm cancer-free,' she told Women's Health. 'Now that I'm five years out, I'm trying to think of it as a positive thing and what can I learn from it."

With an established TV acting career and a role in the new Avengers film to boot, Cobie's only advice to young people wanting to emulate her success would be to avoid overworking themselves.

"Just chill the F out, when you're young, you're so worried. I think I was in such a rush to grow up," she said. "I feel like I should've just chilled out, gone back to college for four years and just hung out. Or traveled around the world or something. Just not work so hard."

Sounds like solid advice to us…

How I Met Your Mother actress Cobie Smulders broke some exciting news on the red carpet earlier this week!

The star, best known for her role as Robin Scherbatsky on the long-running show, appeared at Sundance Film Festival where she casually mentioned to reporters that her three-week old baby was waiting for her at home. Cobie was at the festival to promote her upcoming film Unexpected when she revealed the happy news.

"I'm in Sundance and I have a 3-week-old baby, so I can certainly relate," Cobie said during a discussion about the film's motherhood theme. "It's my world at the moment, and it's just so prevalent in the world today."

Cobie was looking fabulous just weeks after giving birth, wearing a casual skater skirt and loose tee with brogues.

The actress and her comedian husband Taran Killam announced last October that they were expecting their second child. The couple married in September 2012 and have one daughter together, five-year-old Shaelyn Cado.

Although Cobie didn't reveal the sex of her new little one, she had mentioned before giving birth that her and Taran were keen for it to be a "surprise" for them. And a surprise for us too, whenever we find out!

As avid How I Met Your Mother fans, we've come to think of the characters as our best pals.

So we're over the moon with the news that actress Cobie Smulders, who played Robin Scherbatsky on the show, is pregnant with baby number two.

Of course, we'd prefer it if she was having a baby with Ted Mosby, but you can't have everything!

Cobie wed her husband, Saturday Night Live comedian Taran Killam, in 2012. The couple have one daughter together, five-year-old Shaelyn Cado.

A source close to the pair said they had been planning on having more children once Cobie's work commitments eased off. "They talked about growing their family once she was done with How I Met Your Mother and moved to New York," said the friend.

Becoming a mother for the second time will no doubt be an easier adjustment, as Cobie no longer has the pressures of a full-time filming schedule since HIMYM ended earlier this year.

Speaking not long after Shaelyn's birth, Cobie said she was happy but tired. "I think I sleep an average of four hours a night now, so it's just like functioning on fumes sometimes. But it's the best." We're not sure we would have been quite so positive!

The actress said she was lucky to be in a position to have help handling her busy schedule. "It’s a lot of work and I feel extremely grateful because my job allows me a lot of flexibility and freedom… And financially I am able to have a lot of help around."

Congratulations to the growing family!
