Bill Clinton

by

It's a story we constantly hear: intern has an affair with older, powerful boss. Affair gets discovered, woman gets vilified and has her life ruined while the man gets a mere slap on the wrist. It's written about in books and songs now but in the mid-nineties, this played out for all the world to see. Monica Lewinsky was just 22-years-old when she worked as an unpaid White House intern in summer 1995 when her affair with Bill Clinton, the then-49-year-old president of the United States, began.

To put it simply, much of her young adult life was ruined. Lewinsky was investigated in 1998 by an independent prosecutor, Ken Starr who, according to a first-person interview with Vanity Fair, "[was] accompanied by a group of F.B.I. agents [that] had hustled me into a hotel room near the Pentagon and informed me that unless I cooperated with them I could face 27 years in prison."

The Starr investigation as it was known, turned her "24-year-old life into a living hell." The young woman only in her early twenties had her life terrorised, her life altered by a team who were determined to use her to get to Clinton.

She did what so many of us do when we're young; she fell in love and made a mistake. It was a big one. It hurt many people and it's no excuse but in layman terms, that's what it was.  Sure, Clinton was investigated, called out. But today, he is still lauded as a charismatic public figure, despite his many mistakes which included lying to the public – and everyone else in his family – and denying a long-term affair and involvement with an intern. For Lewinsky, she is still synonymous with a blue dress – even Beyonce has sung about it, poking fun at all that her life resembled. She was outed and ostracised back then – and it's still not over for her.

Even google her name; you won't find one article without a tie to the public scandal. Google Clinton and you'll see articles about the latest public event he attended. Yet this was something that involved more than a woman who was young and foolish; it also included a man who was old enough to know better – and the most powerful man in the world at the time – at over two decades her senior. But he's rarely spoken of in that way. She was gaslighted. He was not.

"At the age of 22, I fell in love with my boss. At the age of 24, I learned the devastating consequences."

And today, the now 45-year-old was forced to walk off stage during a live interview during short during a conference in Jerusalem after being asked an "off limits" question about the former President, saying later that the interviewer disregarded "clear parameters" for their discussion.

Lewinsky was being interviewed by Israeli TV news anchor Yonit Levi of Hadashot News when Levi began by asking Lewinsky whether she still expected a personal, private apology from Clinton and took to Twitter to explain why:

"I left because it is more important than ever for women to stand up for themselves and not allow others to control their narrative."

This is a woman who is taking control, after her narrative was defined by others for decades. Because what does it say about us, still as a society, in the era of #MeToo, when almost 25 years after a painful, public humiliation, a woman is reduced to walking off stage to avoid feeling shamed? That she made a mistake is without question, but that she's still getting held to ransom while Clinton's equal part happily gets glossed over by the media at large is so very, very wrong.

Monica Lewinsky deserves so much better.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are one of the most out-there celeb couples at the moment, and they certainly upped their Halloween game last night.

The pair attended Kate Hudson's Halloween party and went dressed as Hillary and Bill Clinton.

They were joined by a whole host of stars including, James Corden, Emma Roberts, Jessica Alba, and Isla Fisher, but by far they had the best costume of the night.

Before Katy left for the party she shared a hilarious photo of being pampered as Hillary on Instagram.

Having a little pre party before I take office #IMWITHME Cheers to @svedkavodka  #howtosvedka @hillaryclinton

We don't think any couple can top this costume.

Previously labelled as sinister folk not to be trusted, left-handed people these days are somewhat more celebrated.

That and, despite living in a world that is very much designed for their right-handed counterparts – they have some pretty high-profile compatriots.

Yup, from Barack Obama, to Prince William and Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates – if you're more inclined to use your left hand then you're certainly in good company.

Here, SHEmazing brings you the FIVE really great reasons why it's actually the best:

1) You earn more money (if you're a man):

According to studies, left-handed males who have gone to university earn 13 percent more than their right-handed counterparts.

Although oddly the results are quite different for women: they earn 5 percent less than women who are right-handed.

2) Half of all cats are left-handed:

Anything from 10 – 30 percent of humans are left-handed (depending on where you are in the world and what research you look at) – but not so for felines.

Yes, 50 percent of cats are left-pawed, according to studies.

3) You're a natural leader:

Five of the last seven US presidents – Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George HW Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford – are or were left-handed.

They're well-represented in royal circles too, examples include Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William.

4) You have to overcome adversity:

From birth, you're being trained to think outside the standard right-handed box – something which helps you develop all sorts of skills that in turn encourages you navigate better the challenges of life.

Indeed, a combination of environmental forces and neurobiology combine to make lefties predisposed to be trailblazers.

5) You see better underwater:

Bizarre but true: when you’re underwater left-handed folk see better. It's not quite clear why this is so, scientists think it has something to do with a different part of the brain being dominant in left-handed individuals.

It was a rousing speech by any – even his own – standards: Barack Obama implored the USA to make sure that Hillary Clinton becomes the nation's first female president when voters go to the polls in November.

And, as the current US president is delightfully want to do, Barack veered away from the prepared script somewhat while addressing the Democratic party national conference yesterday.

"Nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the Oval Office," he said. "But Hillary’s been in the room; she’s been part of those decisions. She knows what’s at stake.

"No matter how daunting the odds; no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits," he added.

Sitting proudly in the audience of thousands was, of course, Bill Clinton, Hillary's husband of 40-odd years and a former POTUS himself.

"That’s the Hillary I know. That’s the Hillary I’ve come to admire,"  Barack continued to applause.

"And that’s why I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman – not me, not Bill, nobody – more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America.

Significantly, when Mr Obama offered up the "not me, not Bill" line – which wasn't actually in his speech – Mr Clinton's face broke into a sheepish grin.

And when the cheers had died down, Obama added: "I hope you don't mind, Bill, I was just telling the truth!"

A French photographer who was the first to confirm that France’s head of state was cheating on his first lady, Valerie Trierwelier, now claims that Barack Obama and Beyoncé are at it as well.

Claims of an affair between 52-year-old Obama and the 32-year-old singer were first made on Europe 1 radio station yesterday and have been circulating ever since.

Mr Obama is a big fan of the Drunk In Love singer and has invited her to perform on several occasions, one of which was his wife’s 50th birthday at the White House last month.

Although it has been reported that Barack and his wife have been a bit distant lately, we hope that these rumours aren’t true – especially since an alleged affair between Bill Clinton and Elizabeth Hurley turned out to be a big lie.

Let’s hope for the same thing here!
