Snow and ice hit the country as Met Éireann issues a weather warning

Was anyone else up early enough to witness the blizzard that unfolded this morning?

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather alert as temperatures plummeted last night, and warns of more snow and ice to come.

"Very cold today, with frost, ice and lying snow in many areas at first," says the national weather forecaster.

"A bright day in most areas, with sunny spells and showers, some falling as snow in the early morning, but mostly of rain, hail and sleet during the day, some of them heavy, with isolated thunderstorms, especially in the west and northwest."

Clearly winter isn't quite done with us yet.

AA Roadwatch has also issued a warning, reminding drivers to be extra careful today during the difficult driving conditions.

"Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and use major routes as they are more likely to have been gritted than secondary roads."

"Remember, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow."
