Five brown lipstick shades that work PERFECTLY with pale skin

From hair mascara to blue eyeshadow, Nineties beauty trends are having something of a revival at the moment.

With that in mind, we reckon it's time to say goodbye to that bold red lip in favour of something a little more retro.

If you have fairer skin, brown lipsticks with red and orange undertones will work best, as vampy purplish browns can drain you, while nude browns can be too light.

However lipsticks can give off different colours depending on your skin tone, so be sure to try a swatch on your hand before even considering buying anything.

If you're a pale-skinned gal, we recommend going less Kylie Jenner and more Scully from The X Files when it comes to your choice of shade. Not as on-trend, but by God could Scully rock an orange toned lipstick.

Here are a few shades to get you started…

1. MAC Persistence
Described as a 'peachy cinnamon,' this terracotta brown will live up to all your Nineties dreams.

2. Maybelline Crazy for Coffee
This is bordering on nude, but with a hint of earthy brown – perfect if you're nervous about taking the plunge.

3. Charlotte Tilbury Birkin Brown
At €30, this is definitely the most expensive on our list, but Charlotte Tilbury is the queen of bold lipsticks. We can't get enough of this shade, inspired by Naomi Campbell and Jane Birkin.

4. NYX Butter Gloss Praline
NYX's Butter Gloss has all the staying power of a lipstick, but with a high-gloss sheen. This creamy reddish-brown will suit most skin tones.

5. Rimmel Lasting Finish Starry Eyed
If you want something more dramatic, give this a go – a berry-toned brown shade that is perfect for a night out.
